Osiris’ pov
There was another rogue attack near our packhouse while I was away. That’s one of the reasons I hate going to other packs, it’s like the rogues know I am not around and try to grab their opportunity. Luckily I had doubled the patrols at the border since last time, so there were no casualties on our side. I’d hate to have to show the rogues why they should fear the Iron River pack again. Although Santos didn’t mind tearing another rogue into pieces.
My pack had gained in size over the past few years, I’ve had new members join and I’ve taken over my neighboring pack. After I found out the Alpha was mistreating his omega’s and women. Every Alpha has their own way of ruling, but Alpha Zeke went too far. He treated the omega’s as slaves and the women as second class citizens. I tried to have a conversation with Alpha Zeke about his pack, but he started attacking me as soon as the meeting started. Like I said, I am not afraid of using violence. So when Alpha Zeke attacked I didn’t hesitate and I ripped out his throat. The Beta and rest of the pack were glad to get rid of Alpha Zeke, apparently he had been mishandling the pack finances as well and they were almost bankrupt.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtIt took me a year and a lot of my own money to get everything back to normal, but everyone found their new place in the Iron River pack and we are thriving. Word got out that I took over the Midnight pack by killing their Alpha, without mentioning who attacked first. I would never kill an innocent man or take over a whole pack for no reason. But my reputation doesn’t matter, all that matters is that every single wolf is safe in my pack. And if fear from others makes that happen, then fine with me.
Beta Riker doesn’t agree with me on this, but he knew better than to argue with me on this. Our pack now constitutes of several cities, the largest is the one my packhouse and home is in. The other is the old Midnight pack and then a small village that is home to farmers. If we can provide as much food and necessities from our own lands we don’t need to ask others for help. But the rogues have realized there is a lot of food there and have been stealing our cattle and crops. That’s why Beta Riker is so keen on me finding new alliances, there is a chance food will run out and we will be forced to buy from the humans.
My pack has lived separate from the humans for decades and I’d rather not be the one to break my grandfather’s rules. The less you interact with humans and stay in your own world, the less likely they’ll figure out who we are.
Our cities and villages are in the forest, near the Blood River border and as their Luna’s father, Alpha Edward might be helpful in setting a meeting up. Until now the Blood River has been very hesitant to meet with us. My father had quite the temper and may have insulted the Alpha of Blood River on one occasion. People thought I was rude, well they should have seen him. But that’s where Beta Riker comes in, our socializer. Beta Riker has been my friend for a long time. He knows how to deal with my moods and he knows what’s important to me.
I know that being Beta is very important to Riker, but what most important to him is his mate. Riker’s eyes light up when he speaks about her and he lets her take over every conversation when they’re together even though he loves to tell the story just as much. I am often jealous of how easy Riker can converse with people, making small talk about absolutely nothing. While I have to think about what I want to say for minutes and still come up sounding rude. Beta Riker has other qualities that make him a great Beta, but him being able to talk easily is an important one to me.
“We really need to set up that meeting with Alpha Edward, there have been too many attacks now. We still have summer coming up, which won’t help with the crops. But we also need meat for the families, we can’t expect our werewolves to suddenly become vegetarians,” Riker said.
“You’re right, go set up a meeting as soon as possible. I’d rather not leave here again, but I will if it’s necessary for our pack,” I replied.
“Perhaps you can apologize to that daughter of his?” Beta Riker said carefully.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmI laughed “I am pretty sure she is over it. It’s just a figure of speech.”
“You called her ugly Alpha. That’s not something any teenage girl wants to hear,” Beta Riker said trying to still sound respectful.
Being an Alpha means you are in charge, so there are not that many situations where you have to apologize. Perhaps I was a bit harsh with my words. But come on, even she must know she looks very different from her sisters.
“I will think about it,” I finally replied to Riker, just to get him to drop the topic.
“I know that you have had been thinking about that evening,” Santos said.
He was right, I had thought about that moment and especially how Lily had looked at me. I had have many men and women look at me with anger, but it had never bothered me until now. I could still see these green eyes staring at me when I closed my eyes at night. But I would never admit this to Riker. I didn’t even want to admit it to myself, the thought that some teenage girl was messing with my head this much after only one brief moment.
