Chapter 613
Downstairs, Old Mrs. Jones sat on the sofa.
Hearing footsteps, she looked up and caught Rachel’s unintended charm in her eyes. Old Mrs. Jones’s expression
froze for a moment, and a complex and obscure emotion flicked in her murky gaze.
Then, she returned to normal.
“Rae-Rae, come to me.” Old Mrs. Jones patted the seat beside her.
Rachel obediently walked over and sat beside her. “Grandma.”
Old Mrs. Jones took her hand. “Well, it’s nothing in particular. It’s just that I haven’t seen you for a few days, and
I’ve been missing you.”
“I was actually planning to visit you today. I didn’t expect you to come by yourself,” Rachel said, flashing a smile.
“Looks like we have a special bond and are always on the same page.” Old Mrs. Jones held Rachel’s hand and
smiled. “Would you like to go to Aureliana with David in a few days?”
Hearing this, David raised his eyes and looked deeply at Old Mrs. Jones.
Old Mrs. Jones glanced at David, then held Rachel’s hand. “Didn’t you say that you’ve never been there before? It’s
a good time to unwind and have some fun.”
“I…”
Before Rachel could finish, Old Mrs. Jones spoke again. “Don’t feel pressured to decide now. Take your time to think
about it. Whenever you want to go, I will be here to support you.”
Rachel smiled. “Thank you, Grandma.”
Old Mrs. Jones reached out to touch Rachel’s face. “You don’t have to thank me, dear. It’s always a pleasure to
have you here with me.”
Rachel gazed at Old Mrs. Jones, her eyes shimmering ever so slightly.
When they first met, Rachel could discern Old Mrs. Jones’s fondness for her, yet she attributed it to her ardent
desire for a grandchild. In their subsequent interactions, Rachel still sensed Old Mrs. Jones’s genuine affection and

possible.
This act of protection made Rachel feel pleasantly surprised, but she knew it wasn’t as simple as showing same
care for both her and David.
Just then, Mrs. Brown approached them, nodding ever so slightly at Old Mrs. Jones before turning to Rachel. “Miss
Grey, I heard your phone ringing as I passed by the bedroom just
now.”
“Got it,” Rachel replied, and then looked at Old Mrs. Jones and said, “Grandma, let me answer the phone and I’ll
come back to keep you company later”
Old Mrs. Jones smiled and nodded in agreement. “Good girl, go ahead.”
As Rachel departed, the smile on Old Mrs. Jones’s face faded a little. She shot a sidelong glance at David and said,
“Are you too impatient?”

David handed her a cup of freshly made coffee and raised his eyebrows slightly. “I’m not sure what I have done to
upset you so much.”
“Don’t play dumb here.” Old Mrs. Jones retorted, taking the coffee and placing it on the table. Her countenance,
usually kind and gentle, had turned stern. “Although you’re engaged to her, she’ll eventually be the mistress of our
Jones family. Yet, you haven’t given her any status yet, and now you’re doing this. It’s too irresponsible!”
Her words were brimming with blame for David,
Faced with her criticism, David had no choice but to agree. “I admit that I handled this matter poorly, but I assure
you, whatever other girls have, Rae-Rae has too.”
As soon as David voiced his thoughts, Old Mrs. Jones’s expression softened slightly, but she made a show of being
annoyed and gave him a stern look. “What good is it for you to make promises to me? It’s Rae-Rae who’s been
wronged.”
David let out a faint sigh and said, “You’ve become so biased now. All you care about is Rae-Rae. There’s no room
left for me in your heart.”
“I can’t help it! Rae-Rae is such a sweet girl. She’s understanding and lovable.” Old Mrs. Jones’s love for Rachel was
evident in her expression. “If it weren’t for my foresight, you might never have found such a pleasing wife in your
lifetime!”
David looked at her with a hint of contemplation in his eyes. “Speaking of which, I’m curious, how did my
engagement to her come about?”
Old Mrs. Jones picked up the coffee on the table and took a sip, glancing at him imperceptibly. “Why are you asking
about it all of a sudden?”
“This is a matter of my lifelong commitment. How can I not inquire about it?” David smiled meaningfully. “I’m not a
three-year-old who’s easily fooled.”
When he went to Old Mr. Johnson with a token of engagement, it was clear that Old Mr. Johnson was extremely
opposed to this marriage. He even asked Rachel to break off the engagement several times, which showed his
strong aversion to this union.
“I heard that Old Mr. Johnson has been claiming illness recently, refusing to go out for social events or accept
visitors. I suspect it’s related to your visiting card, isn’t it?”
This showed that Old Mr. Johnson was strongly against any involvement between Rachel and the Jones family in
Aureliana.
His words hit the nail on the head. If it were someone else, they would have been thrown off balance.
However, Old Mrs. Jones was a seasoned veteran, who had long mastered the art of keeping a calm demeanor
even in the face of great turmoil.
She glanced at David and said without changing her expression, “What’s there to say? It’s just a matter of parental
arrangements and matchmakers’ words.”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm“So, have you met Rae-Rae’s mother?” David asked.
“Of course.”
“In that case, shouldn’t we prepare to propose to the Johnson family?”
At his words, a dark and complicated glint flashed across Old Mrs. Jones’s eyes. “Have you really thought this
through?”
“There’s no need for that. She can only be mine,” said David.
His tone was calm and emotionless, but his words were filled with unwavering conviction.
Old Mrs. Jones stared at him for a moment, a smile appearing in her eyes. “I guess I didn’t misjudge you.”
“If it hadn’t developed to this point, would you have easily allowed me to break off the engagement?” David Jones
asked.
Though this question doesn’t seem to have any problems at first listen, but upon closer inspection, there are traps
hidden between the lines.
If Old Mrs. Jones disagreed, David would definitely notice something amiss.
Old Mrs. Jones looked at him with a smile that was not quite a smile. “But in this world, there are no ‘what ifs.””
With that, the large living room fell silent once again.
After a moment of contemplation, Old Mrs. Jones spoke up again. “The cabinet is hosting a banquet in a few days.
Do you want to take Rae-Rae with you?”
David lowered his eyes, making it difficult to guess his emotions.
He picked up the coffee pot and poured himself a cup, then put the pot down and looked up at Old Mrs. Jones with a
meaningful expression. “Didn’t you already have a plan in mind before you came here?”
If Old Mrs. Jones hadn’t had a plan from the beginning, she wouldn’t have invited Rachel to visit Aureliana with her.
Therefore, whether Rachel went to Aureliana or not was never up to Old Mrs. Jones, but rather
up to Rachel herself.
Just as Old Mrs. Jones had said, as long as Rachel wanted to go, no one could stop her.
Old Mrs. Jones didn’t answer his question. Instead, she lifted her teacup and took a sip, then slowly raised her gaze
to look out the window. Her eyes narrowed slightly, and a murky darkness flashed across them. “It looks like it’s
going to be windy. The weather is about to change.”
