Josie chatted for a while before exhaustion overwhelmed her. She lay on her arm, on the verge of falling asleep.
Dexter half-squatted beside her, tucking her in. "Sleep well. The weather tomorrow will be good." Josie's consciousness faded. She felt somewhat disjointed.
The weather the next daydid turn out to begood. When Josie woke up, the sunlight streamed in, warming her arms and rousing her from sleep. She sat up and saw Grape sitting on the sofa in the hall.
The little girl was absorbed in a book, waitingpatientlyfor her to wake up.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtA wave of guilt surged within Josie. She stepped forward. "What are you reading?" Upon hearing her voice, Grape immediately threw down the book and threw herself into Josie's arms. "Mommy, you're finally awake!" Josie gently patted her head.
"Why are you here all alone?" "Daddy said he went out for a meeting and willbe backsoon. Mommy, are you hungry? There's food in the kitchen!" Grape looked up, eagerly awaiting her praise. She held her hand with a bright smile.
Josie had little appetite and shook her head.
The Russell Mansion always boasted the most stunning views. Their garden was in full bloom, brimming with the beauty of hibiscus trees. The golden osmanthus lining the paths was also in its prseason, with orange-yellow petals scattered all over the ground, releasing a captivating fragrance.
Josie had a rare chance to revisit these ancient buildings on this fine autumn day.
Indeed, it had been a long tsince she had been here.
Grape had been living here for many days and was familiar with many places. She happily led Josie around, showing her all the sights.
Upon seeing Josie, most of the attendants displayed expressions of deep unease, yet they still politely greeted her as "Ms. Warren." In the past, she was always referred to as "Mrs. Russell." Josie didn't fuss over the details. Instead, shejustwalked around until Grape led her to the main hall. It was spacious, with floor-to- ceiling windows through which one could vaguely see inside. Dexter sat at the head of the table.
He wassomewhatabsent-minded, fiddling with a lighter in his hand, pressing it intermittently without any particular rhythm. Grape blurted out, "It's Daddy." Josie gestured for her to remain quiet.
In reality, he hadn't changed much. He often-zoned out whenever he faced something that didn't pique his interest. However, if you were to ask him whether he was listening, he hadactuallytaken it all in. That was Dexter.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmAs Josie was lost in thought, a voice suddenly came. "Ms. Warren." She looked up and saw a graceful figure walking from the end of the corridor. She looked older now, about forty or fifty years old, but she wore a gown, still exuding elegance. Behind her, a servant carried a pot of tea. sŵ"Are you..." "Ms. Warren, it seems you forget old acquaintances easily. We met a few years ago." When Dexter brought her back to the Russell family a few years ago, they did meet quite a few people.
et However because of the family's complex branches, she forgot most of them after the meeting. It was impossible for her to wn remembereveryone. Josie looked apologetic.
The woman didn't mind. She gestured for the servant to bring in the tea before stepping inherself.
"I'm Wyatt Russell's cousin. My nis Cassidy Russell." Upon hearing this name, Josie finally registered it. As their eyes contacted, both of them had theirownconsiderations. With a polite demeanor, Josie greeted, "Hello, Cassidy." Cassidy's eyes showed disdain. "Wyatt is still lying unconscious in the hospital. Don't bother being polite to me." Grape clutched Josie's hand and shrank back, sensing the hostility.
Josie moistened her lips, gently patting Grape's head. "Did you feed your wolf pup today?" She shook her head.
"Go there first. I'll be there in a bit." Grape timidly nodded, then left with the attendant.
