CHAPTER 478
Seated alone in her matrimonial bed, Fang Mei took a deep breath, her thoughts racing as she contemplated her recent problems.
She knew that her next moves would be critical.
She had been given a chance to prove herself, to rise above the recent failure and showcase her capabilities.
And this time, failure was not an option.
The semi-darkness seemed to close in around her, a reminder of the shadowy world she navigated and the high stakes that came with it.
While her mission was on the line, she had her daughter and the man she married to think of as well as his heir, her son.
She had hoped Fang Daiyu would be useful enough in bringing home a rich husband but till now Sun Yichen seemed to be playing house with them, barely giving her daughter the time of day that she wanted.
Fang Mei had hoped when both parties would be seen together, it would spread as trending news that would bring her prestige and recognition in the business world.
So far, that seemed to be an elusive dream even for her.
Her shoulders slouched as she released a deep sigh. Things weren't going as great as she had hoped but she expected for them to pick up.
Just then the sound of the bathroom door pulled open revealing Kai Beifang dressed in a white towel wrapped around his waist and some inside flops.
"Darling?"
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtFang Mei lifted a brow but her gaze remained far from him.
"Who were you conversing with? I thought I heard you explain yourself. Who hurt you?"
She gulped slightly as her brows creased as a single sweat broke out on her forehead. Immediately she masked her initial shock and gave him a charming smile.
"It's nothing." She lied, knowing full well that he could see through everything she said or did, including the lies she told herself.
"I'm fine," she repeated, hoping that if she kept repeating it, he would back off on the topic.
Kai Beifang walked over to the bed where she sat before leaning down to kiss the top of her head gently before pulling back to look at her face with concern written all across his features.
"You sure?" he asked again before sitting beside her and wrapping his arm around her shoulder while holding her hand in his own.
"I shall respect that. Come, it is time to sleep. I'll cuddle you all through," Kai Beifang promised.
She gave a nod, her smile still on her face and stood up. "Go get changed into your pajamas. I'll get the lights after you."
"Thanks."
He placed a soft kiss on her lips and rose to his feet. Fang Mei watched him walk away until she couldn't see his silhouette as he disappeared into the walk-in closet.
"Phew, that was close. I must be extra careful from now on," she whispered to herself.

Bang! Bang!
The sound of a sharp knock on her bedroom door threw Fang Mei out of her sleep.
She blinked several times trying to focus but when there came no response, another loud bang followed, making her groan in frustration.
"Those damn maids."
She groaned again and rolled onto her side only to see she was all alone in bed.
"He's gone to work." She sighed and rose to a sitting position on her bed before giving a calm answer. "Enter."
The second the word left her lips, the door knob turned, and the door pushed open revealing one of her maids, her eyes grim like one who had seen a ghost.
Fang Mei's brows furrowed as the young lady rushed in, coming to a stop a few centimeters away from her bed.
"Good morning, ma'am."
"What's good about the morning when your sleep is disturbed?" Fang Mei lashed out. "Hurry, out with it."
Shaken, the young girl stuttered, "Madam, i-it's the..."
"Feiyu Zhi!"
She shuddered and quickly lowered her head. "Forgive me madam, the young mistress...she's throwing up."
"What?!"
"Madam, I honestly I'm sorry. I..."
"What happened?"
"I went to her room to deliver her breakfast as instructed but the moment I arrived with her meal, she ran away from the room and started throwing up in the restroom. I..."
Fang Mei jumped off the bed and ran for Fang Daiyu's bedroom, leaving Feiyu Zhi behind.
The second she got there; she made her way to the bathroom where she was told her daughter was. Truly, she found Fang Daiyu seated on her floor curled up into a ball while vomiting violently into the toilet bowl.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmHer hair was disheveled and she looked pale as a sheet as she clutched at her stomach and retched again.
"Daiyu!" Fang Mei enunciated and rushed in, kneeling beside her daughter. "Daiyu, what's wrong?"
Her maid stood by helplessly watching while clutching her apron, wondering what manner of scolding she would get for making the Young Mistress sick.
Turning her head from side to side, Fang Mei's eyes landed on Feiyu Zhi, her anger rising at the nonchalance of the young lady.
"Don't just stand there, quickly contact the family doctor!" she scrolled, sending the young lady's hair on ends as she jolted where she stood before scurrying off to do as she was told.
"Mum," Fang Daiyu called out weakly. "I... it's nothing. I just think I am having a fever or something."
"Nonsense. The doctor would tell but when did this start?" she inquired as she helped flush the toilet and lift her daughter up.
Assisting her, Fang Mei brought Fang Daiyu to the sink to wash her face and rinse her mouth. Once that was done, the young lady lifted her head to look at her mother.
"Yesterday morning and..." She did not get to complete her words when a thought registered on Fang Mei's mind.
"Daiyu."
"Mum?"
"Do you know what this means?"
Fang Daiyu blinked several times in confusion then shook her head slowly from left to right as if trying to shake off an annoying fly from her hair.
"When was your last period?"
Her lips parted slightly as she tried recalling how long she had been without one but Fang Mei didn't need an answer anymore.
"I think it is what it is."
Shock was written all over the girl's faces but no sooner had it come than it was replaced with a knowing smirk. "Bingo?"
