CHAPTER 19 JESS Luke pulled away, leavinggasping for air and confused. The park's darkness seemed to swallowwhole, and I felt like I was drowning in its silence.

"Why... why did you kiss me?" I demanded, my voice shaking with emotion. The sound of my own words echoed through the stillness, Luke's expression was impassive, his eyes calm and distant. "You need to go hand talk to your brother," he said bluntly, his tone lacking the warmth I just felt in our kiss.

I felt a surge of anger and frustration well up inside me. "What's wrong with you? You kissed me! Are you that messed up that you can't see what you are doing? Hot then cold then hot and fucking frigid again." I shouted, my voice echoing through the park. "Are you broken Luke's gaze didn't waver, but his jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing slightly. He didn't move or flinch, but I could sense the tension radiating from him.

I took a step closer, my heart pounding in my chest. "You're not even going to try to explain yourself?" I accused, my voice rising to a shout.

I turned away from him, feeling defeated and ashamed. It was still dark outside, and I was thankful for it. I wanted to hide in it, so I ran from Luke again.

I was almost at my house when I stopped, dropping my hand on my knees to breathe. I felt Luke standing behind me.

His warmth seeped into my skin. Slowly, I straightened myself. I looked up at my house. I should have gone in, left him on the sidewalk, and faced my brother, but my body didn't respond.

I felt Luke pullto his chest, my back flush with his body. But my body seemed rooted to the spot, refusing to move as Luke's warmth seeped into my skin like a gentle breeze on a summer day. His head dipped to the nape of my neck, and I felt his lips graze my skin like My head fell to the side as his hands wrapped around my hips, drawingcloser. His right palm flattened against my stomach while his left hand glided over my ribcage, stopping beneath my breast. He pulledcloser still, and my hand found its way to his neck, my fingers weaving into his dark curls, pulling him closer. His lips danced across my skin. He didn't kiss me; he just kept them on me.

I was quiet outside, and the only sound was our ragged breaths filling the morning. The first sliver of sunlight pierced through the darkness, bringingback to reality. I needed to get away from him. He would destroy me.

I knew I would fall for him, and he would not feel a thing. Luke tookn what he wanted, and right now, what he wanted was to mess with my head.

I pulled his hands offand stepped away from his heat. I didn't turn around, look at him or even touch him just left him there in our driveway. Something inwanted to turn around and run right back to him, but I didn't/ I wouldn't. I wanted to say something and ask him what he wanted from me, but my mouth didn't seem to work right now.
