CHAPTER 87 LUKE The highway stretched out in front of me, and all I could think. was that if I had just taken Jess to prom...
If I'd just had the guts to tell Josh and do what I really wanted- be with Jess-none of this would ve happened.
This is my fucking fault. Jess is hurt because of me. She wouldn't have given Bryan a chance in the first fucking place. That animal would not have put his hands on her if I just...
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtShe would've been safe. She would've been with me. "Fuck," I hit the steering wheel like that would help anything, but it got rid of stension.
I needed to focus. I need to find her. If I don't find her, then... Laura said it was a police vehicle, but walking up to the cops and accusing them of kidnapping wasn't exactly going to end well.
The phone rang, cutting through the monotony of the tires humming against the road. I glanced down at the screen. Josh. Without thinking, I hit the answer button and put him on speaker. "Yeah?" My voice was tight with tension.
"Luke, there are patrol cars right behind you. They're close. I just got off the phone with Sam," Josh's voice cthrough, strained but steady. "They checked with the precinct. No police 08:01 CHAPTER 87 vehicles were reported missing. The only ones out tonight are authorized units." My heart sank, and I gripped the steering wheel even tighter. Whatever vehicle Laura saw wasn't a real cop. I had to stay calm and think clearly. Jess neededsharp.
"Okay, so we're dealing with someone pretending to be the law. Fuck," I muttered, trying to piece it together. "Can Laura remember anything else? Was the guy wearing a uniform?" "Sorry, man, Laura's still out," Josh confirmed. "They say she's got a concussion. It'll be a while before she's conscious again, let alone able to give us more details." My jaw twitched as I fought to keep my frustration in check. "I'm gonna get Jess back," I said, my voice firm, even though my mind was racing. "I promise, Josh. I'm getting her back." There was a beat of silence on the other end, just Josh breathing heavily. "I know, man. I trust you," he finally said, his voice thick. "I'm taking Laura to the hospital-Sam's already there waiting for us. After that, I'll head back out. Callif you see anything." "Good," I replied, forcing myself to focus on the road ahead. "Make sure Laura's safe." I ended the call and tossed the phone onto the passenger seat. The highway stretched out endlessly in front of me, but I couldn't shake the gnawing sense of dread. The sky was pitch- black, the only light coming from the occasional headlights of passing cars. It's been a few hours, and I know the stats. The longer she's gone, the less chance we have of finding her. CHAPTER 87 As I drove, something caught my eye-a small, run-down motel on the side of the road. The kind of place people go to disappear or worse. My gaze swept across the parking lot, and I noticed a black pickup truck parked near the entrance. For a moment, it looked familiar, a déjà vu that sent a chill down my spine. But I quickly brushed it off; almost everyone in this town drove a truck like that. Still, it buggedI drove slower, and right there, just past the truck, was a police vehicle.
What were the chances...
"Shit," I muttered, my pulse quickening. It could be nothing, just an off- duty cop grabbing ssleep. But it could also be everything. My mind raced as I debated whether to stop and check it out. I shot a text to Josh, giving him the motel's nand telling him I'd check it out.
The last thing I needed was to waste time, but I couldn't ignore the feeling that something was off.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmI slowed the Jeep, my fingers drumming against the steering wheel, instincts screaming atto pull over.
"Fuck it," I muttered, pulling off to the side of the motel, out of sight, and got out, keeping to the shadows as much as possible.
m "Please, let this be something," whispered as I turned @corner.
Two guys were talking right outside the last room in the row, One was lack one was clearly pissed I ducked down, straining to hear their conversation.
"I can't believe you took them both, man. Now one's on the run!" 09 01 D one of them hissed.
"Maybe she won't make it. When grabbed them at the house, I gave her a really hard hit to the head. I was oke up at all." The surprised she woke other guy replied, and my blood ran ice cold. "What about the vehicle, man? That wasn't part of the plan?" "It's fine. It's my brother's. He's a detective on a stakeout. He only needs it back tomorrow, and the station won't track it. They know he's undercover."
