Growing up with Ruby and Harry since childhood, Lumma knew what were worried about.
She smiled. “Don’t worry. guys. I’m not the old Lumma anymore. I know what I’m doing. Lucas is my legal husband,
and I’m his legal wife. He’s nice to me, and I want to be nice to him. I’ve thought about it. When we meet, I’ll tell
him the truth. If he minds my past and doesn’t want to live with me, I’ll respect his choice.”
Harry supported Lumma’s decision. “No matter what, you have to protect yourself and don’t let anyone who isn’t
worth it hurt you.”
Ruby added, “Remember that we will always be by your side.”
“I know,” Lumma replied.
The three of them chatted for a while before ending the call.
Lumma put down her phone and lay on her bed, unable to fall asleep.
She knew too well what Harry and Ruby were worried about. Because of that incident, she was once unwilling to

She hadn’t mentioned it, but deep down, she had been repulsive to men, especially those with smooth tongues. She
had felt that there was no truth in their words.
As time passed, she met more people, saw more of the world, and understood more of life. By and by, she could
barely remember that man in the past.
What Harry had said earlier was right. She shouldn’t let anyone who wasn’t worth it hurt her.
That man was just an insignificant passerby in her life. She had known him for less than a year and spent even less
time with him. Why should she change her view of men because of such an insignificant person?
As Lumma was lost in thought, her phone vibrated to indicate that she had received a new message.
She checked it out and found it was a message from Lucas. [Are you asleep?]
Lumma: [No, I’m thinking about things and can’t sleep.]
Lucas: [What’s on your mind?]
Lumma’s slender fingers moved across the screen as she typed out a long string of words, wanting to tell him what
had happened before, but in the end, she deleted them one by one.
She thought it would be better to talk about it when they met. That way she could observe Lucas‘ reaction directly.
If he minded her past, she wouldn’t let him live with her unhappily.
So, she replied. [I received a lot of year–end bonuses this year, and tonight Mr. Hills sent us another. I just counted,
and there are 38,000 dollars.]
Lucas asked: [You can’t sleep because of that?]
Lumma: [I’m excited. This isn’t my salary but a gift for the New Year. It’s a windfall, with which I can do a lot of
things.]
Adam had just come out of the shower wearing only a bath towel when he saw Lumma’s message and began to
seriously consider something. $38,000 is enough to make Lumma so happy and lose sleep. He decided to do the
same and make her happy every day.

Lucas: [I just took a shower, and I’m looking for my pajamas.]
Didn’t that mean he was naked when he was chatting with her?
Lumma faintly remembered his good figure.
An ambiguous scene flashed before her eyes. Long legs, tan skin, eight–pack abs…
It was too much. She shook her head vigorously, trying to banish the image from her mind. However, her thoughts
spiraled out of control as more and more tantalizing pictures flooded her mind.
She blamed Ruby’s raunchy jokes for corrupting her thoughts so much so that Lucas‘ random remark triggered a
cascade of forbidden fantasies.
“Ahhh…”
She couldn’t take it anymore. She was going to have a nosebleed.
She buried herself under the covers and hurriedly typed out a few words. [I’m sleepy. Sweet dreams!]
Lucas: [Sweet dreams!]
Even though it was just text on the screen, Lumma seemed to hear his deep, seductive voice. It was as mellow as
vintage wine.
