Once the doctors arrived, they asked Yang Feng a few questions regarding what had happened. Yang Feng briefly answered but did not give a lot of details. Later, he was asked to leave the room whilst they checked her body. He didn't leave until he demanded all of the male doctors to be excused.
The female doctors then confirmed that there was no visible injury anywhere, especially her head, but Zhao Lifei's temperatures were a bit alarming and continually increasing. She had a small fever and would progressively worsen throughout the night.
The doctors instructed the nurses to prepare the IV drips. Then they requested for a previous record of her in the system. A nurse went off to get the files.
Next, they wheeled her into a room to perform an MRI scan of her brain and it was there that they discovered something odd. The frontal lobe of her brain seemed a bit off and was showing heavy signs of activity even though she was in a comatose state. The temporal lobe in charge of emotions was also showing signs of activity.
As the doctors looked over the results of the scan, a nurse came in with the files on her. After checking it, he was not surprised to see one of her previous conditions were selective amnesia.
The doctors discussed the possibility and eventually came to a conclusion lead by Han Wuting who specialized in neurology. Because the male doctors were not permitted near Zhao Lifei, one of the female doctors left the room to bring Yang Feng the diagnosis.
When she walked into the room, she was touched to see his position. She was also very amused by it.
With a chair pulled up to the bed, he was holding the patient's hand, staring intently at her. He looked at her as if she was going to die.
Zhao Lifei's condition was only a reaction to the trauma or memories attempting or beginning to resurface from her selective amnesia. It was not a fatal injury.
She cleared her throat, "Good evening Mr. Yang."

Bai Xingyao revealed a smile, "It has been a while." She remembered the last time she ran into her husband's boss was for Miss Yang Ruqin's hospitalization.
"Skip the formalities." Yang Feng responded. He didn't have the patience to converse with her.
"I apologize." Bai Xingyao's smile did not waver. She was used to this frosty behavior of his.
She turned to her clipboard and flipped a page. "I'm sure you are already aware of this, Mr. Yang, but I will remind you in case it slipped from your mind." She walked to Zhao Lifei's bedside and ensured the IV was dripping properly.
"Miss Zhao—"
Yang Feng resisted the urge to correct it to Mrs.
"—Has selective amnesia. I am unsure when it began or started. Given her condition, I can assume something traumatic must've happened for the brain to violently react and force her to shut down." She glanced at her clipboard again. "You mentioned she said a nickname from her past. For something as simple as that to trigger her body to shut down from pain, it's a very serious issue."
She added, "If you consent, we recommend corrective therapy and if all else fails, hypnotization, to see if she can regain the memories. Perhaps—"
"She doesn't know she has selective amnesia." Yang Feng cut her off, his lips in a displeased scowl, creases on his forehead forming. He was torn about whether or not he should tell her they were once childhood...acquaintances? Friends? He could not pinpoint a word for what they were, though, he could convince himself childhood sweethearts would be a better phrase.
Bai Xingyao wanted to state the obvious and say, "Well. Why not just tell her?" She wasn't stupid enough to say that. Judging by his expression, she could tell he was contemplating something. For her to say that, it would be like telling a drowning person to just swim.
She kept quiet and waited for him to say something. He didn't.
Bai Xingyao wanted to offer words of advice. She was sure Zhao Lifei would've preferred the truth a lot more than being kept in the dark.
Bai Xingyao did not want to cross boundaries, especially when her husband was his subordinate. Besides, Yang Feng was not the type of man who would accept advice from a stranger. And given his high IQ, he probably had thought of her solution already.
She decided to change the topic to something else and let him ponder the solution later on, but he beat her to it. "When will she wake up?"
Bai Xingyao's smile slipped a bit. "Seeing as she was unresponsive to stimuli that should shake her out of sleep, it indicates she is currently in a comatose state. Thus, we can not predict a specific date."
A shadow passed over his face and the temperature dropped. She could see why her husband was so terrified of this man. She hugged her arm and tried to not shiver in the abnormal coldness.
"I will monitor her for now and see if there are any improvements. If so, it might be possible to predict, though, it will not be 100% accurate." Bai Xingyao truthfully told him.
Yang Feng believed fate must've been playing a sick joke on him. The timing was horrible and fate had a horrible sense of humor. He wished it was a real person so that he could beat and torture the life out of it.
Today he proposed to her and she ended up with a coma on the same night.
He breathed through his nose and tried to remain calm.
Don't shoot the messenger.
He wanted to desperately pull out the Mark XIX tucked in his waist. Just thinking of that damn gun angered him more. Zhao Lifei liked that gun and he never had the chance to show her his collection.
He was sure her reaction would be something worthwhile. Once she woke up, he promised to take her on a tour of the underground room where a majority of his weapons were stored. She did not know of this, but one of the paintings in their shared room was a hidden space and a safe was inside of it. The safe contained all of his favorite weapons.
"Do you have any questions for me, Mr. Yang?" Bai Xingyao slowly said, her eyes flickering to Zhao Lifei.
Yang Feng barely glanced at her. He sat down and adjusted Zhao Lifei's blanket.
"No." His voice was hard, yet his actions were that of a doting lover.
He slightly raised Zhao Lifei's head and fluffed the pillow for her. Then, he delicately set her head back down. Next, he went to the humidifier on top of her hospital bed and checked the remaining water level. Seeing it was still full, he walked to the temperature adjuster. He saw that it was a bit colder than her liking and adjusted it to a higher temperature.
Bai Xingyao was reminded of the time she saw him on a magazine cover branding him as the nation's husband. She thought the title was too low for him, for he behaved like a man who walked straight out of the Korean dramas she forced her husband to binge-watch with her.
"If that is all then, please excuse me." Bai Xingyao bowed, even though he did not pay her any mind.
She was about to close the door behind her when she thought about taking one last glance at him. He was by Zhao Lifei's bedside, intently staring at her again. It was as if he was trying to carve every detail of her face into his memory.
She shook her head with a small smile. He was a henpecked husband, that was for sure.
Without another word, she left the room and retired for the night. She was about to finally indulge her husband in his desire to have a child tonight but was interrupted by the ringing of her work phone. The next thing she knew, she was pulling the same stunts as her husband and disappearing off into the night to answer the call. Hah, now he has had a taste of his own medicine!
Fortunately for First Hospital, it was one of the most competitive hospitals to get into as a doctor because of their higher than average pay rate, better amenities, top of the line technology that was constantly updating, trust from the government, and being one of the best hospitals in this country. Working here was the dream of every doctor and every year, they would get countless applications. They were never short on doctors and because they only got the cream of the crop [1], Bai Xingyao rarely got called in after she left work unless it was an absolute emergency.
