Chapter 624
In a fleeting moment, a self-destructive thought arose in Esther’s mind. She wondered, why not just end it all?
Death would put an end to everything.
No. It was her birth, her life, that had been the mistake. When would this mistake ever end?
Esther’s hand found the fruit knife hidden under her pillow. A single, forceful thrust into her heart could end it all.
“Mommy!”
Felix’s sudden cry startled Esther, making her drop the fruit knife instantly. She quickly wiped away her tears,

to greet her son.
“Sweetie, Mommy’s right here.”
Hearing her voice, Felix rushed into her arms and wrapped her tightly. “Mommy, your one and only son is here!”
A smile broke through Esther’s tears as she gently ran her fingers through Felix’s hair. “Who brought you here, my
sweetie?” she asked.
“Uncle Jasper did!” Excited, Felix unzipped his backpack and took out a box of cookies, eagerly handing them to his
mom.
“Mommy, our teacher gave these out at school. Trust me, they’re super delicious.” He opened the box, grabbed a
star-shaped cookie, and offered it to Esther. “Mommy, try this!”
Savoring the crisp, flaky cookie, Esther chuckled. “You’re right. It’s very delicious.”
“Mommy, Uncle Jasper told me you gave your liver to another lady. You’re like a superhero!” Felix climbed beside
Esther, gently wiping the tears from her face with his tiny hands. Concern filled his voice as he asked, “Mommy,
why are you crying?”
Esther pressed her forehead against Felix’s and murmured, “Just seeing you fills me with joy, sweetie.”
“Mommy, the school that Aunt Sadie picked for me is amazing! I’m really happy there!” Felix talked excitedly about
his school life, oblivious to everything else.
Esther’s gaze rested on her son, and she felt overwhelmed with self-reproach. How could she have considered such
a reckless act? She still had Felix, as well as her missing daughter. As their mother, her unwavering responsibility
was to protect them at all costs. If she failed in that, could she even call herself a mother?

Felix’s head bobbed up and down with enthusiasm. “Mommy, I’ve made a good friend! He even invited me to his
house, but I didn’t go.”
“And why not?” Esther’s heart was now filled with love for Felix. She realized that perhaps she and Bradley were
never meant to be together. In that case, it might be best to part ways and let each live their own life.
“Because I want you to meet my new friend, Mommy!” Felix nestled closer, his voice soft and reassuring. “Mommy,
you need to get well soon. Then we can go to the airport to pick up
Sunshine and Jacob!”
