Chapter 94

Chapter 0094

Candice stood there watching this dramatic situation play out and felt a chill in her fingertips.

She slowly recovered her voice and questioned, “Are you…”

Choked, words failed her, and she failed to express her feelings.

Yvonne let go of Peach’s hand and looked expectantly at Candice. She begged, “Candy.”

Candice diverted her eyes, inhaling deeply, about to respond.

Greg cut in, “It waswho called the police. What’s the point of you bothering her?”

Caught off guard, Yvonne hesitated, then turned to Greg.

Disheveled from Ivor’s attack, her hair and clothes a mess, she clasped her hands together, imploring,

“Can

you talk to the police? Ask them not to arrest my husband.”

Greg and Alex exchanged glances, with the latter remaining mute.

With a disapproving frown, Greg cautiously asked, “You do understand your husband has assaulted

someone, right?”

“No,” Yvonne quickly clarified. “He didn’t mean any harm. He was just upset.”

Greg struggled to grasp her logic. He glanced at Candice, who had turned away with her lips pressed

together tightly.

Following his gaze, Yvonne seized Candice’s hand, asserting, “She’s my daughter. This is a family

matter. It shouldn’t involve the police.”

In her haste, her long nails scraped Candice’s hand, leaving a faint mark.

Yvonne’s grip was surprisingly powerful, and despite Candice’s efforts, she was unable to break away.

She then turned to Candice, urging, “Isn’t this man your boss? Tell him!”

Candice felt a coldness settle in her heart. She stifled her anger and retorted, “What is there to explain?

I don’t even know him. Didn’t you see him trying to hit me?”

These were the harshest words she had ever spoken to her mother, and Yvonne froze in stupor.

Yvonne, recovering, weakly countered, “But he didn’t actually hit you, right?”

Candice’s gaze hardened as she looked at her mother, her anger dissolving, and she forcefully

removed Yvonne’s grip. She firmly declared, “Impossible.”

The police quickly took Ivor away.

Yvonne, with Peach in tow, persistently told the officers that Ivor was her husband and had no intention

to harm anyone, pleading for his release.

Candice watched, feeling a suffocating sensation, her chest aching sharply.

“Lex, should we get that checked by a doctor?”

Candice overheard this as she saw Ivor being pushed into the police car. Turning mechanically, she

noticed the bruise on Alex’s wrist.

Alex had earlier intervened in Ivor’s assault on her, receiving blows in the process.

She had not noticed amidst the chaos, and he never mentioned it.

Candice assumed it was nothing serious.

Now, seeing the severity of his injury, she realized the force Ivor had exerted.

Her face paled as she looked at Alex’s wrist, asking, “Are you alright?”

Alex gave her a brief glance, his tone dismissive. “I’m not as delicate as you think.”

She wanted to say something, but Alex, furrowing his brow, impatiently pressed her, “Focus on sorting

out your own problems first.”

Her eyes followed Alex’s, and she saw Yvonne sitting on the ground with Peach, muttering something.

After a moment of silence, she slowly approached them.

Unsure what to say to Yvonne, she stated flatly, “I’ll cover Peach’s medical bills, but only up to ten

thousand a month.”

Yvonne looked up with tears in her eyes, accusing, “How can you be so heartless?”

Candice initially wanted to reach out to offer comfort but halted and retracted her hand, asking dully,

“You think I’m cold–hearted?”

“Isn’t it true? Ivor might be a scoundrel, but he brings in 2,000 a month in unemployment

benefits. That’s what we live on. How can you be so selfish?”

Yvonne’s words struck Candice deeply. Her own mother branded her cold and selfish for a mere two

thousand.

With her gaze lowered and a turmoil of emotions inside, Candice stood lost in thought, oblivious to her

surroundings, until someone grasped her arm.

She looked up into Alex’s deep eyes.

“Here’s your stuff.”

Alex handed her the medicine bag she had used against Ivor.

She took the bag, her lips stretching in a weary attempt at a smile, words failing her.

He watched Candice with a slightly pensive look and remarked, “You really have a knack for getting

yourself into these situations.”

Candice, detecting the sarcasm, was too drained to feign otherwise.

Witnessing the exchange, Greg could not resist chiming in, “Hey, can’t you be a bit kinder to

your employee? If you’re concerned, just say it directly. There’s no need for harsh words.”

Before Alex could respond, Greg addressed Candice, “Let’s grab lunch. It doesn’t seem safe for you to

go back

alone like this. Better to rest a bit.”

Candice initially hesitated, but Greg was natural when it cto socializing.

He added, “Alex is your boss. He wouldn’t want anything happening to you on his watch.”

Alex stayed quiet, apparently in agreement.

As Candice left with Greg, she cast a final look at Yvonne, still sitting despondently on the ground.

She followed them out of the hospital.

They chose a restaurant close by, as Greg had to return to the hospital later.

As they settled in, Greg suggested to Alex, “Why not call your secretary? She’s probably bored alone in

the

hotel.”

Candice was surprised and looked at Alex.

He nonchalantly answered, “The hotel’s too far.”

Greg mocked, “Too far? It’s just a ten–minute ride. The food hasn’t even been served yet.”

Sonia arrived just as their meal was served.

Since Candice was facing away from the entrance, Sonia didn’t immediately notice her.

Sonia, puzzled, asked Alex, “Why are we dining here all of a sudden? I thought we were going back

after finishing our work?”

After she finished, she saw Candice, who was sitting silently across from her.

Greg smoothly interjected, “Perfect timing. You can keep Ms. Renault company instead of just men like

me

and Lex here.”

Sonia’s expression changed subtly as she regarded Alex, who remained stoic.

Turning to Candice, she asked gently, “Weren’t you in Stugan?”
