Chapter 880
The more imperturbable Nicole appeared, the more terrible Betty felt. Looking at the young lady, she bit her lip
before saying, "Nicole, I was also shocked when I learned about this. I knew it was too selfish of your mother to do
so, but your birth parents were already nowhere to be found at the time. Your mother did regret it back then. She
took me to the hospital in an attempt to look for them, but they were already gone, and the hospital had no news of
them either." Perhaps out of agitation, she couldn't help but cough, which made her out of breath as her face
flushed crimson.
Nicole put out her hand and patted Betty's back to help the woman catch her breath.
After a long time, Betty finally stopped coughing violently. She wiped her mouth with her hand; her voice was
hoarse, and there were tears in her eyes. "Nicole, what your mother did was unfair to you, but I still remember

Nicole didn't seem too surprised, as though all of this were just as she had expected. She smiled faintly before
saying in an impassive voice, "Ms. Betty, I'm alright. You have a good rest."
Betty sniffled as her eyes sparkled with tears. She sobbed, "I know you must be unable to forgive Miss Madeline.
Indeed, she was too selfish back then—"
"I don't hate her," Nicole said all of a sudden.
Betty was stunned for a moment. A look of disbelief flitted across her eyes; she had thought that Nicole would
definitely hate Madeline for such a willful act.
A faint smile hovered on Nicole's lips. She seemed very calm, as though she didn't care at all about who her real
parents were. "Mom… was at least nice to me," she said, her eyes lowered. At last, she realized why Madeline
would always hold her to her chest and say things like "Sorry" or "You shouldn't have gone through this" when
William beat her up during her childhood. When I was a kid, I thought it was because Mom was blaming herself for
being incapable of doing anything. Turns out this was the real reason behind it.
She had been suspicious about this while donating blood to Siobhan before. Now that all the answers were laid bare
in front of her, she felt unusually calm; she was genuinely at a loss for how to express herself or put her feelings
into words.
Betty shook her head while saying in a tearful voice, "Nicole, what happened back then was your mother's fault. I'd
like to apologize to you on her behalf."
Nicole closed her eyes. When she opened her eyes again, she looked all imperturbable. Suppressing the mixed
feelings inside her, she forced a smile and replied impassively, "Ms. Betty, my mom is already gone. There is no
need for me to blame this on a deceased person. Many years have passed since then, so I've gotten over it."
A wave of panic overcame Betty when she noticed how calm Nicole looked. She would rather Nicole throw a

tantrum and curse Madeline in a fit of rage. "Nicole, do you really—"
"Really," Nicole replied indifferently. She stood up and continued, "Just take a good rest, Ms. Betty. I asked the
doctor, who said you've got too many drugs in your system. Though they've been adjusted to safe levels at the
moment, you'd still be left with many complications." Looking at Betty with her bright eyes, she went on, "Once
you're almost recovered, we'll live together. I'll look after you for the rest of your life."
Not knowing what to say, Betty looked at Nicole, unable to utter a word.
Having finished her speech calmly, Nicole turned around and left.
The instant the door closed, tears immediately fell from her eyes.
Do I hate Mom? Or do I not?
Madeline wasn't a bad woman. She had at least never abused Nicole physically or verbally during the latter's
childhood; in fact, it was she who had always stopped William without any regard for her own safety whenever he
tried to hit her. That being said, if it weren't for Madeline, she would've been a daughter of the Wrenn Family by
now. She would've been an upper-class heiress who lived a pampered and carefree life; she wouldn't have been
tricked by Queenie into sleeping with Colton six years ago, nor would she have been forced into staying abroad for
so many years.
