Allan Barry swallowed as he heard his name called. Tension built in his chest as he positioned himself at the entrance to the circuit. His eyes scanned each obstacle, and his breathing quickened as the reality of the impending challenge set in.
Spectators held their breath, eager to see how the young archer would handle the pressure.
Allan was from the Georgia Campus and was known for his shooting skills, but this new circuit would test every aspect of his prowess.
A beep signaled the start of the challenge, and Allan began the circuit with focus. Although slow to run, he definitely knew how to shoot well and was very accurate, but the problem was that in this challenge it was agility that would set him apart from the good archers of the other competitors.
Allan hit the first targets with ease, and the audience applauded his promising performance. As he progressed through the circuit, Allan tackled the obstacles with skill, but he seemed to get more and more nervous because his score was not increasing as much as he had hoped. He frantically looked around, trying to find more targets when he spotted one or two, but the fast pace of the challenge made it difficult.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtKlaus watched intently, noticing Allan's difficulty. He knew that the hidden targets would be the crucial point to get a high score, and he hoped to see other competitors notice them to know where they were hidden. However, apparently it was not going to be as easy as he had hoped it would be.
Finally, Allan completed the circuit in 4 minutes and 5 seconds. Gasping, he looked at his score and saw that he had managed to pass 300 points, putting him at the top of the table because he was first.
The next two archers had very similar performances to Allan's and one was even worse as he missed targets by trying to shoot fast moving arrows instead of stopping and shooting.
Still, each archer brought something unique to the challenge, and Klaus studied their performances while his mind calculated possible scenarios. He was impressed with most of them's skill at shooting on the move, because he thought they would be worse, but he realized they lacked a bit of perception to notice the hidden targets. This meant that in fact whoever could find the hidden targets was the one who would get the advantage.
Finally, it was Ethan Williams' turn, the fourth to be called.
When his name echoed through the gym, the atmosphere became even more tense. Ethan walked to the entrance of the circuit with a confident smile on his lips, as if he was eager to show off his skills.
Klaus watched Ethan intently, and that look was reciprocated. There was great tension between them, because of the teasing Ethan had done earlier.
"Let's see if this guy is as good as they say..." Klaus said loud enough for only himself to hear, resting his head on one of his arms.
Ethan began the circuit with impressive speed. His movements were fluid and confident, and his arrows found their targets with ruthless precision. Before the timer hit a minute, he was already over two hundred points and halfway through the circuit. In addition, he would occasionally shoot arrows that at first seemed random, but would hit the hidden targets, substantially increasing his points.
His constantly moving eyes captured every detail of the scenery, and his arrows found the hidden targets with ease.
His score steadily increased, standing out among previous competitors.
Klaus watched with a mixture of admiration and rivalry. There was no denying that Ethan was good, very good, perhaps much more talented than him, but Klaus knew he could go faster.
As Ethan made his way around the circuit with surprising agility, Klaus began to mentally plot his own strategy. He knew he needed to find a way to balance accuracy and speed, and it was clear that he should not use a medium compound bow as he had in the first challenge and as Ethan was using now.
When Ethan finally completed the circuit, the audience erupted in applause and shouts. His performance had been impressive, and he was momentarily ahead of all the other competitors, with 737 points in 3 minutes and 30 seconds.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmAs Ethan left the circuit and returned to the competitors' seats, he looked at Klaus with confidence and a smile on his face, as if teasing Klaus to do better.
"737 points... Not bad, huh?" teased Ethan, raising the tension between them even more.
Klaus kept his composure, responding with a slight smile. "It's a good score, but I'm not so sure it's perfect."
Ethan gritted his teeth, because he knew he hadn't done as well as in the first challenge, because his specialization was in static standing.
As the other competitors continued to perform, Klaus studied every detail of their performance, looking for strengths and weaknesses to improve his own strategy. He already knew that being agile and precise would not be enough, but also understanding the circuit and finding the hidden targets to score more. The minutes dragged by as the competitors advanced, and excitement washed over Klaus.
Finally, Klaus' turn came after an hour. He stood up with determination and walked towards the entrance of the circuit. The crowd was silent, watching expectantly.
Before entering the huge glass booth of the circuit, he stopped and instead of taking the medium compound bow, he took a simple light bow and took a deep breath to calm his nerves.
"Wow, but Klaus took a simple light bow this time. Did he get confused or does he have something in mind?" The commentator asked the narrator.
Peter, the narrator. "It's hard to say, after all yesterday he was in the Team Fencing Tournament and today he is here, competing with archery.... Maybe he's trying a different strategy to beat Ethan's score, or maybe he's not confident in his agility and wants to gain speed with a lighter bow. Only time will tell!"
For his part, Klaus blocked out all distractions around him, focusing only on the circuit in front of him. Klaus entered the circuit booth, determined to show what he was capable of and all other sounds in the arena were silenced. Then a voice rang out.
"The challenge will begin in ten seconds. Prepare yourself."
