Mabel steadied Elijah as he got to his feet, and they started catching up on the past three years. Life had been tough for both of
them. Elijah had his own battles—gathering evidence, biding his time, waiting for the right moment. Nothing hade easy.
Finally, Mabel asked, “I heard from Estelle that you got married?”
Elijah had indeed tied the knot. “Yes, to a girl | met in college. I'll bring her over to meet you one of these days.” He seemed at
peace with his decision.
Mabel, looking far more accepting than before, said, “Elijah, here in Bright Town, all | want is for you to be happy.”
“The Ulbricht saga is a quagmire. Be careful not to get too caught up in it.”
“I' will,” he assured her.
Leaving the hospital, Elijah made a call: “I'm done here. Meeting with the Ulbrichts tonight.”
Back at the Ulbricht residence, instead of his new bride—Amber Granger—he was greeted by Octavia.

“Ms. Donahue.”
Elijah stepped out of his car, regarding Octavia with a cold gaze. It had been three years since they last met. In that time, Elijah
had transformed from a dashing young gentleman into a powerful figure within the Ulbricht family. The gentle demeanor he once
had was gone, replaced by a more intimidating presence.
Octavia, visibly ufortable, bit her lip: “What do | need to do for you to spare the Donahues?”
The Donahues were on the brink of collapse, and all their former allies had deserted them. The authorities were still investigating,
and their situation was precarious. She had no choice but to plead with Elijah.
“l know you despise me, and the Donahues. Whatever you want to do, | can accept it, but please, spare my parents.”
Elijah couldn't help but feel both amused and disgusted. “Ms. Donahue, do you remember three years ago, when my father was
critically ill in prison, and | begged you to use your influence to letsee him one last time? What did you say?”
Octavia’s eyes widened in shock.
“You said, ‘That's your father, what does that have to do with me?"”
Elijah’s voice was calm but icy: “Now, I'll return those words to you. ‘That's your parents, Octavia. What do they have to do with
me?”
Tears welled up in Octavia’s eyes as she stared at Elijah. “So, you blme? You hate me, is that it?”
Elijah frowned. “Shouldn't I?”
“Octavia, we were together for six years. Didn't | treat you well? My parents treated you like their own daughter. | never expected
you to stand bythrough the hardest times.”
His voice grew harsher. “But when my father was dying, a simple gesture from you could have letsee him one last time. |
begged you on my knees. Did you agree?”

Octavia turned pale.
“If my father had been taken to the hospital just half an hour earlier, he wouldn't have ended up in a vegetative state.”
Elijah had known that people could be unpredictable, but he'd never imagined that six years of relationship couldn't evoke a shred
of sympathy from Octavia.
“Ms. Donahue, the downfall of the Donahue family today is their own doing.”
“Instead of wasting your there, you should think about how to salvage what little you have left.”
Octavia knew Elijah harbored hatred for her and understood that the events of three years ago couldn’t be undone. She didn’t
want to drag the Ulbrichts down with her. Refusing Elijah’s plea had indirectly led to his father bing a vegetable. She had
known Elijah wouldn't be inclined to help easily.
“Elijah, for old times’ sake, can you please spare me—"
Just then, a sleek white sports car pulled up, and Amber stepped out. Seeing the scene before her, her smile froze instantly.
