Chapter 815
Grace sensed the tension in the air, mistaking it for remnants of a past grudge.
“Bri, you had a bit too much wine last night. Feeling any better?”
“Much better now.”
“Try to take it easy next time, okay?”
Brittany settled into her chair and delicately sipped from her mug.
Joie, itching to stir the pot, said, “Grandma, since Brittany is about to marry Isaac, maybe
she should set aside her work for a while and focus on supporting him. What do you
think?”
Brittany’s heart skipped a beat.
Was Joie suggesting she quit her job?
Grace frowned, clearly not understanding why Joie would say such a thing.
To Joie, Grace’s reaction seemed like agreement. She cleared her throat to continue, “You
know, traditionally men worked while women took care of domestic affairs. Bro Isaac
needs support right now, so Brittany should consider shifting her focus to the family.”
The more Brittany heard, the more uncomfortable she felt.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtShe and Grace had known each other for years, yet Grace rarely meddled in these
matters. Still, Brittany wasn’t sure if Grace had been holding back her opinions or if she
genuinely supported her career ambitions.
Grace, unable to tolerate any more, interjected, “Joie.”
“What is it, Grandma?”
Joie was oblivious to the issue with her statement.
“What you just said is an ancient concept. In this new age of equality, a successful
marriage should not require one person to entirely sacrifice their career.”
Grace had always embraced progressive values and never interfered with Brittany’s
career plans. She added, “A strong marriage is about striving together, rather than one
person advancing while the other abandons their pursuits.”
Joie was taken aback by Grace’s point of view.
“Grandma, I…”
“That’s enough, let’s not bring this up again.”
Grace was growing discontented with Joie. How could someone so young still harbor
such old-fashioned thoughts? Brittany was doing so well in her career; how could she
possibly give it up?
Grace’s words were a relief to Brittany, who had never considered abandoning her career.
After dinner, Brittany accompanied Grace upstairs to rest.
Daniel was sprawled on the living room’s plush carpet, engrossed in an advanced math
workbook.
In the kitchen, Emily was preparing little cupcakes for Daniel.
Joie approached Daniel and squatted down, “Daniel, do you not like me?”
Daniel shrank from her touch, his face etched with distaste, “Why would I like you when
you’re after my dad?”
He wasn’t foolish; he could see that Joie had always been fond of his father.
Taken aback by Daniel’s perceptiveness, Joie bit her lip.
As Daniel stood up to leave, he gave Joie a warning glance, “If you dare to bully my mom
again, I’ll spill everything. Then Grace won’t like you, and you’ll be kicked out!”
Joie was stunned.
The nerve of this little brat to threaten her!
She clenched her fists, swearing to herself that she would deal with Daniel soon.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmAfter nearly two hours of conversation, as Brittany was about to leave, Grace called out to
her.
“Bri, I know you and Joie have your differences, and I’m aware that I wronged you five
years ago. I truly want to make amends now.” She paused and then continued, “If Joie has
done anything inappropriate…”
Brittany’s hand tensed around the doorknob. Five years ago, Grace had unhesitatingly
favored Joie.
She couldn’t bear to hear more, afraid of being hurt again.
But to her surprise, Grace insisted, “If she steps out of line, don’t feel obliged to spare my
feelings.”
Grace was clear in her thoughts; one was like a granddaughter to her, the other a
granddaughter-in-law. She couldn’t play favorites.
Brittany was taken aback, “Grandma.”
She hadn’t expected Grace to say such a thing.
Grace read the astonishment in her eyes and felt even more remorseful.
“There won’t be a repeat of the past.”
