Only after Cayden's departure did Avery breathe a sigh of relief.
But if truth be told, she was not completely at ease.
While scrubbing the plates in the sink, she sighed deeply in her heart. She could not wrap her head
around what was wrong with her.
The words Yvonne said in the office rang in her head when Cayden told her he had some matters to
settle that night.
I guess Yvonne makes a point. It seems like all men do love the nubile body of young women.
Even though the twenty-four-year-old Avery did not think she was old, she knew she was nowhere
comparable to Yvonne, who was only nineteen.
Perhaps in the eyes of men, there's really a difference between a woman who has given birth and a
woman who hasn't.
Living in the technologically advanced generation, Avery was clear there were not only many
douchebags in the world but many foolish women too. And essentially, there was only a fine line
between whether she would become one or not.
It's no wonder someone like Cayden has many women flocking around him. After all, he is wealthy and
powerful. Besides, he's good-looking and has a well-toned body. There's no way he would mean a
lifetime promise whenever he expressed his love...
Half past seven in the evening, Xavier arrived downstairs in a car.
Since Zachary and Rory loved taking the subway, Avery had intended to take them for a ride.
“Mr. Moore called me earlier before he left to settle his work. He instructed me to rush over before you
guys leave home,” Xavier explained, clearly taking Avery as Cayden's wife.
However, Avery recalled how Cayden was reluctant for Xavier to send over a new pair of pants the
night before because the latter was out on a date.
He mentioned that it was an important matter for a man to keep his girlfriend company.
Moreover, it was almost over working hours.
Afraid that Xavier's girlfriend would be mad at him, Avery did not want to trouble him and thus quickly
responded, “We can take the subway. It's fast and convenient. You should go and do your stuff instead,
Mr. Dartsley.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtXavier awkwardly laughed. “Being able to work for Boss is my utmost pleasure right now. Don't stand
on ceremony, Ms. Rumpley. Hurry and get in.”
Despite so, Avery was still unwilling to get in the car.
He needs to have some private life too!
“Perhaps you haven't tried taking care of kids, Ms. Rumpley, so you might not know. But it's an
extremely tedious task to take two kids with you. All it takes is just a split second of distraction and they
might...” Xavier dared not take the risks as he could not afford to bear the responsibility.
They are the Moore family's precious children, after all!
Though Avery reckoned it was too grand of a moment when they were merely off to buy some
pajamas, she eventually got into the Bentley with Zachary and Rory.
...
Moments later, at the central square.
Avery was clueless about what kind of pajamas to choose for the kids. As much as some were rather
expensive, she thought it was worth it as long as the kids were happy.
Having missed spending time with them for the past five years, all she could do now was to try her best
to get used to their lifestyles and habits slowly.
Meanwhile, Cayden was in his office, busy with work matters. It was the second time in his life after his
family's business crisis that he turned into a workaholic.
Every second of his life was laden with financial responsibilities.
At that point, his life had long been filled with heaps and piles of boring data. From the moment he
woke up to the time he turned in for rest, he would have a continuous supply of work matters he had to
deal with—a plethora of documents to sign, contracts to read, and decisions to make. The routine
would repeat daily.
Before setting off to Livingsfill, he had to finish at least ten days' worth of work in advance.
He did not want to be interrupted or occupied by work during his trip, since the time he get to spend
with Avery was immensely precious.
About nine at night, Xavier finally returned to the office building.
The breathtaking city's night sky fell into the office through the glass windows. Right before the
windows was Cayden, who was busy shuffling his gaze between the stack of documents on the desk
and his laptop screen. It was almost as if he was a man made of steel, and despite the many
responsibilities weighing on him, he had merely any clue what exhaustion meant.
On the other side, Zachary and Rory finally fell into a deep slumber after much persuasion from Avery.
Following that, she got up and headed to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of water to drink. Whipping
her head up to glance at the time, she realized it was almost ten o'clock. Yet, Cayden had not returned.
Turning around and leaning against the kitchen counter, she stood with the glass in her hand,
seemingly so lost in her deep thoughts that she forgot to drink the water.
Cayden didn't make things clear. So, he intends to leave the kids in my care in future situations like this
while he leaves to settle his stuff?
In that instant, Avery felt an inexplicable displeasure surge within her.
I should be happy that he isn't here to irk me off. But why do I feel a little awful? Perhaps I'm acting that
way for the kids? They are used to getting an abundance of love from their daddy but receiving no
maternal love, and yet now it's the other way round?
That intense mental activity left Avery's head pounding, so she returned to her room to get some rest.
But that was not all. As she drifted off, she had a dream. In the dream, Zachary and Rory told her that
they disliked her.
Zachary pointed at her and yelled, “Go away! I don't want a mommy like you! It's your fault! It's all your
fault! You pushed Daddy to that evil woman. That's why we don't get to see Daddy or feel his love
anymore. Daddy has a baby with Ms. Gallagher and no longer wants us!”
Avery jolted awake in the middle of the night.
Snapping open her eyes, the sight of her house came within her vision. Nonetheless, it took her some
time before she could recover from her state of mind. As the moonlight shone through the windows,
she glanced at Rory, who was sound asleep beside her. Running her fingers across her sweat-covered
face, she sprung up at once.
Shifting her gaze to the clock, she noticed it was already one in the morning.
Heading outside the room, Avery found only three pairs of shoes by the door. Instantly, she figured
Cayden did not return.
I gave him the spare keys yesterday. Where has he gone? Don't tell me he's spending time with
Yvonne.

At the thought of the countless occurrences where Cayden looked extremely unsatisfied as he could
not unleash his desires in front of her, Avery felt so overwhelmed that she was short of breath.
Did he go to Yvonne to satisfy his needs? Yvonne probably would give him anything he wants...
Those thoughts almost consumed Avery, till she forcibly smacked her head in frustration to wake
herself up.
Oh gosh, Avery Rumpley! What's wrong with you? You're in no way his wife! You shouldn't care too
much about him! Giving birth to Zach and Rory five years ago was nothing more than a mere
transaction. You're in no place to have any complaint now that he's willing to let you spend time with
the kids! Are you such a fool that you're actually becoming so possessive of a man with that status?
After continuously convincing herself to return to her senses, she lay down again. It took her a long
while before she finally drifted back to sleep.
However, that horrendous dream continued.
She had similar encounters previously but had never experienced such emotions like that particular
instance—so mentally exhausted and burdened.
In the dream, Rory clung to Cayden's thigh and threw Avery a glare. “I don't want you either. Daddy has
taken care of us for five years. what about you? Where were you? Since Daddy doesn't like you, we
won't like you anymore too!”
“Don't go. Please don't go.” Like a resentful and pathetic woman, Avery tugged onto Cayden's sleeve
after watching another woman taking the two kids away, and with her face full of tears. She pleaded,
“Don't you want me? I'll satisfy your needs. I'll give in to whatever you want right away. I beg you,
please. Please don't take Zach and Rory away from me...”
“I won't go anywhere. I'll be here.” A man's raspy yet deep and magnetic voice suddenly rang out
beside her ear.
Avery had no idea if that was the reality or just a dream.
By the time she opened her teary eyes after being in a struggle for quite a while, it was already bright
outside. Cayden's exquisite facial features were right before her eyes, so close to her. As she slowly
raised her head from within his arms while still in a daze, her lips accidentally came into contact with
his chin.
