Chapter 638 Wait Patiently For My Return
Cayden stared at Avery's puzzled face. Her expression was so solemn that he could not help bursting into laughter.
Tucking her hair behind her ear, he said softly, “If Mrs. Lambert is amicable with you, just accept it. No matter what,
she's still your biological mother. It's far better than being cold and distant, right?”
She's indeed very smart. But sometimes, she acts like a lost little girl.
Avery buried her face in his chest and said, “Even though I know that Mrs. Lambert is my biological mother, she
doesn't know I'm her daughter. I'm afraid that if I interact with her too much, I wouldn't be able to control myself.”
Cayden reached out and gently tapped the tip of her nose with a finger before chuckling. “You've got so little self-
confidence in yourself? You don't need to worry too much. After all, she—”
Before he could finish his sentence, his phone suddenly rang. Snagging it, he saw that it was from an unknown
international number.
He hit the answer button.
On the other end, sounds of labored breathing drifted out. It was as though the person was struggling for air.
Nothing was said.
Patient for once, Cayden waited for a whole minute. Yet, the person on the other end remained silent.
He was about to hang up the phone when a familiar voice suddenly rang out from the other end. “Save me!”
It was Sid's voice.
Cayden was taken aback, and his hand tightened around the phone. He glanced at Avery, only to see her gazing at
him with a gentle look in her eyes.
His eyes flickered. With his phone in hand, he walked over to the balcony.
His voice was soft, yet it carried a sense of undisguised tension. “What exactly is going on?”
“I-I'm currently being held captive by the Remdikian Mafia in Mocset. Their boss specifically asked for you to come
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtover. There are really no other options left for me.”
It was the first time the usually unrestrained and wild Sid felt so apprehensive.
His speech was exceedingly fast, like a trapped beast struggling on the brink of death.
“How did you get involved with the Remdikian Mafia?” Cayden frowned.
Slanting sunlight streamed in from the window, casting a warm glow on his white shirt. Yet, the warmth did nothing
to soften the cold detachment written on his face.
Sid did not have the time to explain things in detail to the man. He hastily said, “This situation is beyond serious this
time. If you don't come, I don't think I'd make it out alive... Ah! Ah!”
Shrill cries of agony seemingly penetrated through the phone and entered Cayden's ears directly, sparking a strong
sense of foreboding within him.
He urgently cried out into the phone, “Sid? Sid?”
“Hey!” Suddenly, the person on the other end of the phone seemed to have changed into someone different. A
pleasant and alluring voice of a young man sounded.
Then came a series of Remdikian words. “Mr. Moore, your friend is in my hands. He has done something wrong,
having touched my most beloved treasure. Thus, he must be punished. If you don't come to claim him, I'll
personally airfreight his lifeless body to you.”
It seemed as though they were afraid Remdikian wouldn't be understood there. Another hoarse and raspy voice
repeated the man's words, translating them into Chanaean this time.
Cayden, who has always been good at concealing his emotions, finally showed a crack in his façade.
He replied in extremely fluent and standard Remdikian, “I'm not sure what my friend has done to upset you, but I'll
be there. In the meantime, I hope you can ensure his safety. I'll get there as soon as possible.”
Seemingly surprised that he could speak such fluent Remdikian, the other man stilled for a moment before laughing
coldly. “Mr. Moore, your reputation precedes you. I look forward to your visit.”
After saying that, the person on the other end of the phone hung up abruptly. A second later, a string of numbers
appeared on Cayden's phone screen.
Having hung up the phone, Cayden was in a foul mood. Upon seeing that message, he immediately called Xavier
and had the man book him a flight to Mocset.
Sid was currently in a dangerous situation. Making matters worse, the other party wanted him to go over that day
itself.
The man had once helped him, and in return, Cayden promised to fulfill three requests from him.
He was not an ungrateful person but a man of his word. Hence, he had no choice but to save Sid. Even if danger
lurked ahead, he would have no regrets.
He must repay the debt he owed others, even if it meant risking his life.
Avery noticed the grave expression on Cayden's face and heard his urgent instructions to Xavier to book a flight.
She could not help but feel anxious. “What exactly happened, Cayden? Why are you in such a rush to go to Remdik?
Had something happened over there?”
Looking at Avery's worried face, Cayden went straight to the point. “Something has happened to Sid in Remdik. He's
being held captive by the mafia, so I've got to make a trip there.”
Avery raised her eyes sharply, staring right at the man's stern yet handsome face. “Is it dangerous? Can you not
go? What mafia?” I've only heard of it in TV shows, but it actually exists in reality?
Although she had suffered many hardships from childhood to adulthood, she lacked extensive social experience.
She vaguely heard someone pleading for help from her husband on the other end of the phone, and that stirred a
faint sense of worry within her.
She did not want Cayden to take any risks. At that moment, she was filled with fear and unease.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm“I have to go. Sid has helped me before,” insisted Cayden.
Avery asked in perplexity, “But can't we send someone else? Can we ask Xander for help?”
The brilliant sunshine outside had turned into overcast in her eyes at that moment.
“There's no time left, Ery. They specifically requested for me to go over personally.”
Cayden pecked her on the lips in consolation before dropping his hold on her. Then, he added, “Rest well at home.
The baby is due in just over a month. You should take a break from work for now, take good care of yourself, and
wait patiently for my return.”
“Cayden...” Avery grabbed onto Cayden's sleeve. “I'm afraid you'd be in danger. I'm downright terrified. You're just
a businessman. How could you be a match for those mobsters? Aren't you putting yourself in danger by going
there? What do they want from you? From what I've seen in TV shows, those... those organizations... go around
extorting people... demanding money.”
Her world had always been simple, untouched by the brutalities of life. She had never experienced the dangers
lurking outside, yet she indulged in movies about the mafia.
She recalled the movie titled “The Godfather” she had once seen. The mafia was always ruthless and merciless,
lacking a sense of reason or morality and killing without batting an eye. Thus, she was genuinely afraid that
something might happen to Cayden.
If something were to happen to him, what would become of me and the kids?
Cayden grasped Avery's hands.
Her palms were icy cold and damp, a unique reaction she had when she was nervous.
He hugged her helplessly, comforting her by coaxing, “Trust me, Avery. Even if it's only because of you and our kids,
I'll definitely return safely. Wait for me at home.”
Subsequently, he forcibly pried her hand away. Under her worried gaze, he put on a formal suit. Finally, he gently
kissed her. And in the end, he still left.
He walked away without a backward glance.
