But there was no way the girl was gonna let Theresa walk away by herself, so she dragged her feet until the cops showed up.
Theresa knew a cop uniform when she saw one, and her little heart was a mix of awe and fear.
But she remembered her mommy telling her, if you're in a pickle, go find a cop for help. So when she saw the two officers stepping
closer, Theresa's heart was thumping as she seriously said to them, "Officer, | lost my mommy's drawing, can you like helpfind
it?"
The officers were kinda blown away by the little girl's way with words.
The older cop squatted down in front of her: "Alright kiddo, how about you cback with us to the station, and we'll call your
mom and dad to pick you up, sound good?"
Theresa, hearing the officer agree, felt a mix of happy and worried: "But, can you takeand I'll show you where the drawing is?"
The two officers exchanged a glance, not quite sure how much of her baby talk was legit and how much was make-believe, but
decided to go along with it to calm her down first: "Okay, we'll take you there."
Theresa got all pumped up, hurriedly hitching up her bottle bag and pointing towards Brandon's company building: "Let's go, now,
it's over there, we'll be there in no time."
In her excitement, she started to stumble over her words, getting all muddled up.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThe officers followed where her finger was pointing, but with all the skyscrapers in the way, they couldn't tell exactly where she
meant.
But Theresa, sensing their confusion, quickly added: "The tallest one."
The officers looked at each other again, then back at her: "How about we head back to the station first, and wait for your parents
there?"
Theresa immediately shook her head in panic: "We gotta hurry, to find it, before it's gone."
"Okay okay, we'll go take a look."
The officer soothed her in a soft voice, scooping her up, not really taking her words to heart, figuring she's just a little kid with a big
imagination, and finding her folks was the top priority, so they half-tricked, half-coaxed her into the police car.
At first, Theresa thought the cops were taking her to find her drawing and was super happy. As she got in the car, she didn't forget
to lean over the seat to direct the driving officer: "You gotta turn over there."
"Roger that." The driver chuckled and nodded.
The officer holding her asked, "Little one, what's your name?"
"I'm Theresa." She answered while keeping her eyes glued to the window, getting antsy because she didn't see the officer turn the
car around.
The officer didn't catch her anxiety, thinking she was like any other kid, easily distracted, and kept on probing: "Where do you
live?"
Theresa pointed vaguely outside the car, still fixated on the direction they were going, and said urgently: "Not here."
The officer kept on asking: "What's your daddy's name, and your mommy's? Do you remember?"
Right then, the car took a turn towards the station. Theresa knew that wasn't the way to HandsUnkie's company and suddenly
burst into tears: "I don't wanna go with you."
Both officers were startled by her reaction, turning to look at her.
The little girl's crying tugged at their hearts, making them feel guilty like they were tricking her.
After a quick huddle, they figured that even though the girl's words was a bit jumbled and she couldn't string long sentences
together, her ability to express herself was clear as day, and she probably really was in a hurry to find something.
"There there, we will take you. But you gotta tell us, do you know how to get a hold of your mom and dad? We gotta get you back
to them, or they will get worried."
The officer holding her quickly reassured her.
Theresa nodded eagerly: "Okay."
Seeing that she could communicate well, the officer holding her gave the driver the heads up to turn around.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmThe driver quickly swung the car in a new direction.
Theresa, recognizing the route to HandsUnkie's company, stopped crying, wiped her tears away with all her might, and didn't
forget to say thanks: "Thank you, officer."
The officer holding her was touched by her grown-up demeanor and gently dabbed her tears with a tissue.
The little girl, a tad embarrassed, awkwardly avoided looking directly at the officer.
Soon the police car pulled up in front of Starlight Building.
