Austin and his family were on the third floor of the Luxury Restaurant.
It cost his parents a whopping five hundred dollars to book this room.
Chad and their parents were all heartbroken when they caught sight of the bill.
To dine in such a fancy restaurant was indeed too much for any poor family from a small town, but they had no choice.
This was the restaurant chosen by the woman Chad had to meet up with.
"It's all right," Austin's mother kept reassuring him. "Your father and brother now have their own jobs. They can earn at least five
thousand dollars every month. We can afford to eat here even just this once."
For his part, Austin was amused more than anything.
He was tempted to tell his mother that they had, in fact, enough money to buy the entire Luxury Restaurant, let alone have a
single meal there.
They were filthy rich.
Well, he wanted the perfect opportunity and timing to break the news so he kept his mouth shut.
The four of them waited and fidgeted in the room for the better part of two hours before the door opened.
Afra entered along with a young girl.
Afra was in her fifties, had small eyes, and wore impeccable clothes and dark lipstick.
Austin immediately had the impression that she was a cunning old hag.
He turned to look at the girl behind her.
He eyed her up and down, his eyebrows slowly rising as he took in every detail.
The girl was probably around twenty-five years old, had curly red hair, fair complexion, and very fine features. In short, she was
pretty.
What was more, she had excellent taste in makeup. She wore it lightly, with only a faint swipe of silver on her lids that made her
look all the more alluring.
She was also wearing a beige one piece dress, which gave her an air of chic sophistication.
It would seem that she preferred a style that made her look more mature than her age.
Austin glanced at her eyes, and he couldn't help but feel that this younger girl was shrewd and experienced beneath all her facade.
His spiritual sense being as extremely strong as it was, and he being a good observer, so he could infer a person's character with a
single glance.
'This woman appears to be very good with men, ' he thought to himself. 'She seems worldly and able to manipulate people easily.
My brother, on the other hand, is simple and honest. They wouldn't be a good match."
Meanwhile, Chad and their parents had also been discreetly eyeing the girl as they exchanged greetings and pleasantries.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtJudging by the looks on his family's faces, Austin knew that they found her favorable, most likely because she was beautiful.
He could even see hints of a blush on Chad's cheeks as he stole glances at the girl from tto time.
As it was, his family poured tea for the two women, coddling them.
They didn't notice the way the young girl's eyes sharpened when she looked at the Lin family and how her glances bore a hint of
disgust and contempt.
It didn't take long before she dismissed them altogether.
She took out her iPhone and proceeded to play games, completely ignoring her adoring audience, acting as if they didn't exist.
Afra, on the other hand, was enthusiastic in her interactions with the family.
She told them that the girl's nwas Kate, and explained her circumstances.
Kate used to work in a big city. She had returned only recently and found a job in town.
Afra said the girl intended to marry and settle down here.
"So you've worked in a big city. It's very different from a small town," Austin's mother addressed Kate kindly. It was obvious she
was eager to talk with her prospective daughter-in-law.
In response, Kate only nodded without taking her eyes off her screen.
Austin's mother kept trying to engage her in conversation several times after that, but Kate never showed interest. She hadn't
once said a word.
When the waitress entered to serve them, Austin's mother directed her to take Kate's order first, and offered their guests’ order
whatever they wanted.
This development seemed to cheer Kate up somewhat, and she finally put her phone down.
She was in a good mood as she enumerated all the expensive food on the menu.
Austin's parents were appalled. They were looking at the menus themselves, and the prices of the food Kate was ordering were
popping up.
Their minds were scrambling to calculate the total amount it would cost them.
When Kate was finally done, all three of Austin's family gasped in alarm. This single meal alone would cost them about three
thousand dollars!
Austin gave a little smirk of derision.
Afra and Kate were shamelessly whispering among themselves, and he didn't miss the evil glint in their eyes.
His family, on the other hand, kept silent.
They were determined to shoulder the cost of this dinner even though their dismay was palpable.
'Ah, my family are such simple people, ' Austin thought.
‘This is why they tend to be bullied.’
Kate had returned her attention to her phone, and conversation in the table halted. While they were waiting for the food to be
served, Austin's mother dragged Afra to the corner of the room.
"Do you think that Kate would agree to go out with my son?"
Austin's spiritual sense was ever on the alert, and he had no qualms about eavesdropping. "Yes, yes," Afra the matchmaker replied
casually.
"Kate toldjust a while ago that she is willing to date your son."
"Is that so? That's good."
Austin's mother sighed with relief.
"The money we spend here tonight won't go to waste, after all." "But she wants eight thousand dollars from you." Austin's mother's
jaw dropped. Afra continued.
"If you agree, then she will continue seeing Chad.
Once the wedding is settled, this amount will be considered as part of the betrothal presents."
"What? She wants eight thousand dollars?"
To say that their mother was aghast was a gross understatement.
This night was already costing them thirty-five hundred dollars, and Kate wanted them to give her eight thousand more.
They would have to pay out more than ten thousand dollars just to get her to date Chad.
"Well, this is a bit..." Their mother was finally balking.
Chad and their father remained silent.
Of course, Afra the matchmaker jumped in for the kill.
"Con, you know how it is.
Girls nowadays naturally want to marry rich men.
If you want your son to marry Kate, then you shouldn't be so stingy."
At this point Kate had her sharp, cunning eyes on Austin's mom, anticipating the older woman's answer.
'Although Kate seems to be a good girl, this is just the first meeting."
In his mind, Chad was also weighing his options.
'And there is no certainty that we will end up married. | don't think spending this much on her is such a good idea.’
Austin's thoughts were taking an angry route.
‘Looks like this girl isn't here to find herself a marriage partner in my brother, but to swindle our family of our money!
There's no point in dragging this on any longer."
Without saying a word, he picked up a cup of tea and rose from his seat. Drink in hand, he walked over to where Kate was sitting.
"Stop!" the girl cried in alarm. "What do you think you're doing?"
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmAustin did stop just in front of her, and sneered.
"What do you think it is that I'm about to do? I'm going to teach you a lesson." Then he threw the tea at her face, and it soaked her
hair and dress. Kate screamed.
"Are you out of your mind? You are so screwed, you son of a bitch!"
Afra was yelling furiously as well.
"Do you have any idea what you've just done?! How dare you insult her like this? Do you want your brother to live alone for the
rest of his life?"
Austin only rolled his eyes, his cold voice laced with malice as he addressed the two women. "You bitches. Did you really think |
wouldn't know the games you're trying to play here? You're just here to milk us out of money. Get out!"
"Nonsense!" Afra shouted at Austin, before turning to his mother.
"Has your son gone crazy? I'm trying to help Chad find a wife, and this is what you do! This is too much!
Do you know that I've been a matchmaker in this town for decades? | have connections to influential people! | swear to you, your
sons will never be able to find a woman to marry in this town. Mark my words!"
