Chapter 962 I Lied to You
The next day, Jenny was busy with work at the hospital as usual when she unexpectedly
received a call from Evan. It was the first time he'd called her since the incident.
"Jenny, would you like to have lunch with me this afternoon? " Evan's tone was neutral, so
Jenny couldn't gauge his emotions behind the question.
She checked the time and realized she had two more hours to go before she ended her
afternoon shift. Jenny thought she should be able to finish consulting her patients by that
time, so she accepted Evan's lunch invitation.
"Sure," she replied.
After hanging up, Jenny continued to busy herself with work and didn't think much about
why Evan wanted to see her.
Two hours later, Jenny met up with Evan at the hospital gate.
"Sorry for being late," Jenny apologized. She'd been held up by a patient as she was about
to leave. After she was done explaining some things to the patient, she ran a little late for

Evan didn't mind. He opened the car door of the passenger seat for Jenny and said, "Get
in. I'll take you somewhere for lunch."
Jenny got in the car without refusing or asking where they were going. Soon, the car
started and sped off.
During the ride, neither of them spoke. Evan didn't know what to say while Jenny waited
for him to speak. She thought that since Evan had called her, he must have figured out
how to explain things to her.
Fortunately, they arrived at the restaurant shortly after. Evan led Jenny to a private room.
Silence permeated the air as they took their seats.
"What would you like to eat?" The way Evan carried himself seemed no different than
usual. If it hadn't been for the fact they hadn't been in touch for a couple of days, Jenny
would've thought nothing was wrong.
She returned to her senses and replied casually, "It's up to you. I'm fine with anything."
Evan didn't insist and ordered a few dishes. Unsurprisingly, they were all Jenny’s favorites.
After the waiter left the room, it was just the two of them. Jenny looked at Evan, waiting
for him to speak.
Soon, Evan looked up, and their eyes met. He seemed to know what Jenny was expecting
and sighed helplessly." Jenny, you're putting a lot of pressure on me by looking at me like
this."
"Am I? I'm just waiting for you to say something." Jenny felt that if he didn’t plan to explain
things to her today, they would no longer need to keep in touch with each other.
Although she believed that Evan wouldn't hurt her intentionally, she wouldn't continue to
keep in touch with him. After all, he wasn't the same Evan she thought she knew -too
many mysteries surrounded him. These unknown aspects about him might also bring
unforeseeable dangers.
Evan sighed, knowing that he wouldn't be able to continue keeping Jenny in the dark.
Fortunately, he'd already prepared before he came, so he wasn't entirely at a loss. "I lied

Jenny furrowed her brows but didn't say anything; she just listened silently.
"I wasn't doing honest work abroad. Instead, I hung out with some people and established
a certain reputation for myself after a few years. That was how I managed to get some
men to work under me," Evan explained.
He thought it wasn't technically wrong for him to word it that way. He did hang out with
someone abroad; it was just that this "someone" happened to be a mercenary leader.
Jenny's tightly furrowed brow didn't relax, and her eyes seemed to have a hint of
confusion. "How did it turn out that way? With your abilities, you should have landed an
excellent job after graduating."
"Well, I can only say that it's not as easy to get by abroad as I thought it would be." He
didn't want to tell Jenny what had happened specifically. In the beginning, he hadn't
expected to end up where he was now.
However, if one were to ask whether he regretted it, Evan's answer would probably be
"no." If he hadn’t decided to take this path in the first place, he would still be an ordinary
employee when he returned to the country. With that kind of status, how would he be able
to compete with Alec?
