Chapter 300
Clara was a bit taken aback by his sudden seriousness, then she smiled.
“I get it. I’ve been with you for so long. If I still don’t get your character, wouldn’t I be a complete dunce?”
“As long as you get it. I need to head back to the office. You should go and come back early. I’ll come home with
you tonight. I want to show you our new house. I’ve had Ricardo prepare everything. It’s not far from the beach.”
Clara was itching with anticipation at this. She absolutely adored beach houses.
Living in such a house, when she was feeling down or had something on her mind, she could just step outside, feel
the sand under her feet, and gaze at the boundless sea. This was the kind of house she always dreamt of having.
“Great!”
Emmett gave a slight nod, then left his office.

“Hello, Clara.”
It was Leah Calloway!
“What’s up? I want to meet with you. Right now!”
“What’s the rush? Something happen?”
“I’d rather tell you in person.”
Clara walked over to the window and looked outside.
Leah seemed to sense something was wrong, paused for a few seconds, and then said, “All right, let’s meet at our
usual spot.”
“Okay!”
After hanging up, Clara grabbed her bag and left the office, driving to the agreed-upon meeting place.
As she pushed open the door, she saw Leah sitting by the window, marking up some documents.
Clara walked over, and Leah looked up, saying, “Clara, you got here so fast? I thought you might be late because of
the traffic. I didn’t drive; I took the subway.”
Clara wasn’t in the mood for small talk. She sat down and asked straight away, “Did you meet with Emmett’s
mother?”
Leah was taken aback, “Emmett’s mother? How could I have met her? I’ve never been to the Melendez family.”
Clara frowned, “Oh, are you going to play dumb? She already told me.”
“Told you what?” Leah shrugged innocently, “Clara, I have no idea what you’re talking about. What about Emmett’s
mother?”
“Stop playing dumb!”
“I really don’t know! I’ve been so busy lately, you see, I even brought my documents for our meeting! Is there a

“Misunderstanding? Do you think I’m that easy to fool? You’ve been meeting with Emmett’s mother behind my
back, haven’t you? What are you up to?”
Leah threw up her hands in exasperation, “Wait a minute, I don’t understand why you’re suddenly accusing me?”
“Quit playing innocent!”
Leah took a deep breath, “You guys had me pretend to be Alex and Aiden’s mother, and I helped. Now you’re
saying I contacted Emmett’s mother on my own? I really didn’t do anything.”
“Are you telling the truth?”
“Of course! Could it be that Emmett’s mother mistook me for the boys’ mom?”
Clara’s eyebrows knitted together. That might be possible.
“Clara, believe me, I really didn’t do anything. If I did, what would be my motive? How could I possibly want to
replace you?”
Clara looked into her eyes; she didn’t seem to be lying.
But all these coincidences made it hard for her to believe it was just a coincidence.
“Do you remember that bakery? Emmett’s mother likes to buy pastries from there.”
