Chapter 127 It Will Be Over Soon

Lily was torn between ensuring her own survival and saving the children. She was still able to remain

cool and calm despite the perilous situation she was in right now.

She could escape, but not her children.

However, if Lily didn’t escape right now, she and the children would die in this place. If that were the

case, no one would be left to avenge the children.

If Lily had kept a heart of ice, she could have escaped.

Unfortunately, she had to possess immense mental fortitude and a ruthless personality to watch her

children perish in flames.

Lily took a deep breath, resulting in her choking on a lungful of thick smoke. She started coughing

violently on the spot.

At the same time, she clenched her fists tightly, a streak of cruelty and decisiveness flashing past her

eyes. Then, she scrambled to her feet and ran out of the burning building.

“Mommy!”

“Mommy, save me! It hurts a lot!”

When Lily reached the exit, she paused in her tracks before turning around stiffly to look behind her.

She could see the two children screaming and crying hysterically amidst the thick smoke. They were

both calling out to her desperately in an attempt to awaken what little maternal love she had within her.

Lily could only grip the doorframe tightly. It was scorching hot to the point that her hand started sizzling

loudly, but she didn’t even register the pain.

“Mommy…”

“Mommy, are you abandoning us?”

The children’s breathing started slowing down. Their voices had grown so weak to the point where the

roaring flames were louder than their cries for help.

Lily found herself torn between the selfish desire to survive and the torment of her maternal love. She

yearned for her own life, yet she also longed for her children’s survival.

All she needed was to take one more step. Then, she would be able to escape from the inferno once

and for all.

However, if she were to return to her children, she wouldn’t be able to leave at all.

Just as Lily was engulfed by despair, she looked down only to see two keys sitting in front of the

doorway, which was quite ironic.

Those keys resembled gifts from the universe-they helped Lily make the ultimate choice and emerge

triumphant in the battle against her rationality.

Lily was no longer hesitant. She bent down to pick up the keys before turning on her heel and rushing

into the flames.

While Lily and the children were fighting for their lives, Robert dealt with the procedures with the

contract in hand so that he could have the shares transferred to himself.

The surging flames licked the building ravenously on top of the mountain. The passersby who

traversed the streets below could vaguely see wisps of smoke rising into the atmosphere.

“Is the mountain on fire?”

“That seems to be the case. Something’s burning up there.”

Many people halted in their tracks just to look at the mountaintop. Some people even pulled out their

phones to start taking pictures of the burning site. Some people even called the police.

Meanwhile, it was already lunchtime when Lewis and Josephine were done watching their movie.

Following that, they went out for lunch.

Since Josephine’s knees were still aching, she didn’t walk much.

She didn’t expect Lewis to accompany her throughout the day, which weirded her out.

After marrying her, he rarely returned home. It was already a huge blessing for Josephine that Lewis

was able to dine with her, much less spend the day shopping with her and catching a movie together.

Lewis took Josephine on a shopping trip to buy her clothes that afternoon.

The clothes he bought weren’t to Josephine’s liking. He bought them based on his own preferences.

Then again, Lewis had bought a lot of clothes, including winter and spring clothing. He carried

countless shopping bags the whole time. Once nightfall descended, he finally got into the car with

Josephine.

“Did you have fun today?” Lewis turned around to ask Josephine.

All the latter could do was nod wordlessly. She should be happy, but in actuality, she wasn’t that

delighted.

She felt that Lewis was acting very weirdly the whole day.

Lewis reached out to caress Josephine’s cheek. “It’s good that you had fun.”

A smile curled on his lips, but it was one of mystery.

At that moment, his phone started ringing loudly. Lewis wasn’t in a rush to answer the call. Instead, he

asked Josephine, “What would you like for dinner?”

Josephine glanced at his chest, knowing that his phone was still ringing from his breast pocket. She

was silent for a moment before gesturing her response. “I’m fine with anything.”

“Okay. We’ll go home for dinner,” Lewis said with a smile.

After that, he finally pulled his phone out and answered the call at a relaxed pace. Before he could say

anything, Daphne’s voice drifted through the speaker immediately. “Lewis, where are you?”

“I’m outside right now. What’s wrong?”

“Something bad happened. I need you to come back right now.” Daphne suppressed her voice as if she

was avoiding someone.

“I don’t have time right now. I’ll talk to you later.”

Lewis ended the call before driving Josephine home.

The latter turned around to shoot him a glance. She noticed a faint smile curled on Lewis’ lips in the

dark, but that smile made him look more dangerous.

After all, Josephine had seen Seth smiling like that in the past.

She averted her gaze and lowered her head. For some reason, she suddenly remembered Lewis’

words from the night before.

“It will be over soon.”

It was just a normal sentence, but whenever Josephine recalled it, she would feel quite uneasy.

Lewis intended to drive Josephine home, but he received another call on the way home.

This time, Robert was the one who called him.

Hence, Lewis drove Josephine to the suburbs.

A perimeter of barricade tape encircled a specific area in the suburbs, attracting numerous onlookers

who stood outside the barricade, straining to catch a glimpse of the accident zone.

Several police cruisers were stationed at the perimeter with their siren lights on. The assembled crowd

murmured amongst themselves, exchanging rumors and speculating on the unfolding situation.

“Someone died in the fire that was started on the mountain. They were really pitiful.”

“Does anyone still live on the mountain these days?”

“I don’t know. Perhaps there are people who still live there. The mountain poses great danger, as

anything can readily ignite and trigger a blaze at any moment.”

Josephine could feel her heart skipping a beat out of anxiety as she turned around to look at

Lewis.

They were still sitting in the car at that time. Too many people were crowding around the barricaded

zone, so they could not get past the crowd. Additionally, their current vantage point offered no visibility

except for distant flickers of light moving down the mountain path from the summit.

Lewis lit a cigarette and started smoking in the car.

A moment later, Robert called him once again. “Where are you?”

“I’m at the scene.”

Robert ended the call right away. Two minutes later, he appeared out of nowhere and opened the car

door to get into the car.

Josephine frowned slightly. Since Robert and Lewis were both here, there was a chance that the victim

might be their mutual acquaintance.

“Let’s go home.”

Lewis obeyed his father’s command without a word as he threw the gear into reverse and backed away

from the scene.

The atmosphere in the car remained silent. Once the car returned to the main road, Robert’s voice

finally drifted from the backseat. “Lily and her children are dead.”

“Oh? Has the news been confirmed?”

Robert pinched the spot between his brows. “Not yet. I’m still waiting for the autopsy results, but I did

see their bodies. The corpses match their frames. Also, we found her bag on the way to the accident

site. Inside the bag, we found her ID and other important documents.”

Lewis responded nonchalantly, “What a shame.” His tone remained detached, devoid of any discernible

emotion.

Robert became displeased upon hearing that response. “For goodness’ sake, your sister is dead! What

the hell is with that response?”

Lewis just smiled in return. “Didn’t you say the results aren’t confirmed yet? You must have wanted her

dead very badly, Dad.”

“You rascal-” Robert was so furious that he couldn’t squeeze out another word.

He soon recalled the phone call that Lily had made this morning, making him feel quite uneasy. Robert

had a feeling that her death was somehow linked to the contract.

The tragic news of Lily’s unfortunate accident hit the public as soon as he was done dealing with the

contract. The timing of these events was bound to raise suspicions among certain individuals, who

might question Robert’s potential involvement in her untimely demise.

After all, Lily’s shares had been transferred to Robert, and tragically, she met her end on that very

same day. There was no way Robert would be able to clear his name.

The older man let out a sigh filled with melancholy upon reaching that conclusion. He snuck a glance

from the corner of his eye in Lewis’ direction. A certain thought crept into his mind, making him shiver

for no reason at all.

“Lewis, do you really not know anything about Lily’s incident?”

Lewis focused on driving silently. He replied casually with another question, “Why should I know about

it?”

“Didn’t you-”

Robert paused halfway through his sentence. He only told two people about his decision to kick Lewis

out of the directors’ board. It was completely normal for Lewis not to know anything.

That meant Lewis had no reason to pick a fight with Robert.

Perhaps someone else was the mastermind.
