Chapter 171 Mr. Alvarez Might Have Overdrunk
Josephine halted. Frantically avoiding Mrs. Jinkins’ gaze, she bit her lips and shook her head.
Mrs. Jinkins had seen enough to see right through her reaction.
She took Josephine’s hand and heartfeltly said, “Josie, don’t lie to me. I won’t be at peace with myself if
you’re miserable because of me.”
Josephine abruptly looked at her and waved urgently. She signed, “It’s nothing, Mrs. Jinkins. I’m fine.
Don’t worry about me.”
Mrs. Jinkins looked at her thoughtfully. She couldn’t help but reach out with her withered hand and
caress Josephine’s face.
Mrs. Jinkins choked back a sob as she said, “Josie, I hope I’m not a burden to you.”
Her words triggered Josephine’s urge to cry. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she tightened her grip on
Mrs. Jinkins’ hands.
In fact, she was dragging Mrs. Jinkins into this.
If only Mrs. Jinkins had been more self-centered, she wouldn’t end up like this, and her son and
daughter-in-law couldn’t have mistreated her to this extent.
Josephine shook her head and hugged Mrs. Jinkins.
Mrs. Jinkins radiated warmth. The feeling was unfamiliar to Josephine-she felt cozy, as though she was
with family.
She had felt such warmth from Lewis’ embrace before, but she had no idea why his embrace turned
cold after that, infused with someone else’s scent-it no longer belonged to her.
Josephine shut her eyes and attentively enjoyed the fleeting, precious moment. Soon, she might forget
about Mrs. Jinkins, Avery, and everyone else. Eventually, she might even forget herself.
Mrs. Jinkins gently caressed her back, lulling her to sleep like she used to when Josephine was
young,

It was already 2 am when she woke up.
Looking at the time on her phone, Josephine was alarmed. She sprung upright.
Mrs. Jinkins let her have the bed and watched her from aside affectionately. When she woke
with a start, Mrs. Jinkdns jumped too.
“What’s wrong, Josie? Did you have nightmares?”
Josephine immediately shook her head. She had just thought of something-Lewis forbade her from
visiting Mrs. Jinkins alone. She wondered if he had already found out.
Josephine pulled the sheets aside and signed, “Mrs. Jinkins, I have to go.
“It’s dangerous to be out at this hour. Why don’t you leave in the morning?”
Josephine shook her head and insisted on leaving. She couldn’t risk complicating the situation. further.
She signed, “I’ll be fine, Mrs. Jinkins. I’ll hail a cab and reach home before you know it.”
Noting her decisiveness, Mrs. Jinkins decided to say nothing more. She could only urge Josephine to
be careful.
Josephine promised her, put on her shoes, and left the hospital.
After the infusion, her belly felt much better. It was only aching slightly now.
She was waiting for a cab at the hospital entrance when she received an unknown call.
Josephine answered it though she had no idea who would call her at this hour.
The
“Is this Josephine Vance?” The voice sounded familiar, but Josephine couldn’t put a face to it. person
on the other end had already introduced himself, “I am Kiran Alvarez. Chairman Alvarez might have
overdrunk. Do you think you can come and get him?” Kiran paused before continuing, “I’ll send you our
location via text. It’s up to you whether or not you want to come. “Then, he hung up and shared their
location with Josephine shortly after.
Josephine read the text. It seemed they were at a hotel she hadn’t frequented before. At that moment,
her cab arrived, and she showed the driver the address.
The driver was surprised. “Oh! That’s a seven-star hotel. Is that your destination?”
Josephine hesitated momentarily before nodding.
“Alright. Hop on.”
Josephine got into the car, pretty sure Kiran wouldn’t lie to her regarding such issues. He was the
president, after all. Not everyone was like Seth; Kiran wouldn’t risk his position as
president of Alvarez Corp just to get at her.
Josephine calmed down at the thought of this.
It was raining again. Elysium was raining every night nowadays; there would be pouring rain on some
days and showers on other days. Even if the sun dazzled during the day, it would still rain at night,
alternating between torrents and drizzles.
Josephine looked out the window at the night view flashing past, her mind flitting back to what Kiran
said and the photo Quintin sent.
Weren’t Lewis and Sierra together?
Why would Kiran choose to inform her?
Josephine was baffled. She massaged her aching belly and sighed.
Soon, the cab arrived outside the hotel. She paid the fee and entered the hotel according to the
location she received.
Lewis and Kiran were on the sixth floor. There was a large lounge here. She could hear voices coming
from inside.
Josephine stood by the door for a while. She took a deep breath and raised her hand to open the door,
but then, she hesitated, recalling the incident at Magic Cube.
Besides, she couldn’t speak, and those were reputable people inside; would Lewis think she was a
disgrace if she entered?
But Lewis wasn’t the one who called her here.
However, the door opened before she could make up her mind. Kiran walked out. He saw Josephine
and said, “You’re here, Miss Vance. Why are you standing at the door? Come on in.”

Without waiting for Josephine’s response, he reentered the lounge.
Josephine scanned the lounge and faltered.
The lounge was crowded. Men and women huddled together in twos or threes, immersed in cheerful
conversations.
They were gloriously dressed, and she looked like a total misfit in her sweater and jeans. It was as
though she was from a different world from them.
Josephine swept her gaze across the room and finally found Lewis sitting on a sofa in a corner.
Lewis propped his head against his hand. No one was beside him, but many people lingered nearby,
most having a female companion.
In contrast, Lewis was alone.
Kiran walked toward Lewis and sat on Lewis’ left. As he did, he turned and shot Josephine a glance.
Josephine pressed her lips tightly and walked in, biting the bullet.
Fortunately for her, her presence didn’t attract any attention, so nobody noticed her entering.
Slightly bewildered, she went behind Lewis and stood like a statue, fidgeting with her fingers.
Kiran glanced at her before saying, “Miss Vance is here.”
Lewis’ face changed when he heard Kiran. He promptly sat upright and tilted his head to look
behind him.
He saw Josephine out of the corner of his eye.
Kiran called out to Josephine, “Don’t just stand there, Miss Vance. Have a seat. We’re not at a meeting;
it’s just a corporate event.”
Josephine stole another glimpse at Lewis. He had resumed his posture, ignoring her completely.
Feeling ill at ease, she sat beside Lewis.
A middle-aged man sitting across from them said, “Mr. Alvarez, your assistant has finally shown up.
We’re almost done here, so the assistants are up next.”
Josephine heard him and looked toward Lewis.
