Chapter 6 Where Did This Old Hen Come From?
Avery helped Josephine remove her helmet. Both of them were completely drenched, but the coffee in
Josephine’s arms was intact.
“Are these people crazy? Do they not even have a coffee machine in this big company?” Avery ranted
as she took the coffee from her hands and smiled. “Hey, you can wait here. I’ll be right back.”
Josephine nodded lightly and walked to the main entrance to wait.
The rain grew heavier, and it seemed like winter was coming with the downpour.
Josephine stared into the rain, her mind wandering.
On the day Grandpa Alan brought her to Alvarez Manor, it had also been pouring heavily. The nine-
year-old Lewis had scrutinized her and asked who she was.
Grandpa Alan jokingly replied, “I found you a wife. Do you want her?”
Lewis, who was so young at the time, sneered and said, “I don’t want a monkey as my wife.”
He was right. She had been really skinny back then, and her hair was very dry. She might have looked
worse than the monkeys in the zoo.
But then he added, “If you don’t eat more, how can you be my wife when you’re so skinny?”
She knew he was joking, but she took it seriously every time.
Josephine was lost in thought when a voice brought her back to reality.

“It’s raining so heavily. I don’t feel like working anymore, so I’m leaving now,” Sierra said as she
gracefully walked out of the building in her high heels. When she turned her head, she saw Josephine,
soaked to the bone.
“Josephine?”
She was on the phone with Lewis, so he also heard that from the other end of the phone.
Sierra turned to look at the office building, then glanced at Josephine. She hung up the phone. “Are you
here to look for Lewis?”
Josephine waved her hand to indicate that she was not here to see him.
Sierra raised her eyebrows and walked toward the woman. Her eyes scanned Josephine up and down
like miniature X-rays.
“Lewis said you’re naive, but you don’t seem it at all. Look at you, coming to see him all wet.” She
reached out and picked up a strand of wet hair from Josephine’s shoulder. “People will pity you seeing
you like this.”
Josephine stared at the woman whose face was full of pride and arrogance. “But what’s the point of
this? To him, you’re just like a pet. You think it’s love when he caresses your head? Don’t even bother.”
Josephine pursed her lips tightly, and maybe because it was too cold in the rain, her lips turned pale.
She didn’t need Sierra to say it. Josephine knew it in her heart.
The way Lewis usually looked at her was no different from the way he looked at the cat he reared at
home.
He liked his cat a lot too. Sometimes, he would forget to feed it before going to work and made sure to
return home to do it.
Liking and loving were two different things, after all.
Just then, Avery came out after finishing the coffee delivery and overheard what Sierra just said. She
quickly walked up to Josephine, stood protectively in front of her, and eyed Sierra up and down.
“Oh, where did this old hen come from? Why are you being so loud? Are you trying to find your coop?”
Sierra’s face changed, and she glared at Avery. “Did you forget to brush your teeth after breakfast?
Why are you saying all that shit to my face? Who gave you the right to speak?”
She crossed her arms and looked at her provokingly.
“Who do you think you are? You think you’re superior just because you’re bullying someone who can’t
speak? I’ve really never encountered anyone like you, running into other people’s homes and
squawking everywhere. Are you that desperate to let everyone know your secret?”
“You…” Sierra’s face turned red from being choked by her words.
She hated it the most when people talked about her non-official relationship with Lewis. If it weren’t for
Josephine, she would have been the one to marry him! Why should she be insulted like this?
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmBecause of Lewis’ constant pampering, Sierra was used to being arrogant, and no one dared to speak
to her like this to her face. She raised her hand and was about to swing it at Avery.
But why would Avery let her do that? Before Sierra could even land a slap, Avery’s hand was already
on her face.
“Ah—”
Sierra, stumbled stumbled on her high heels and fell to the ground. She held her foot as tears streamed
down her face due to the pain.
Josephine was shocked by the sudden turn of events too.
Avery looked down at Sierra from above and mocked, “You really thought you could win? You might
need to hit the gym more frequently.”
The woman gritted her teeth to endure the pain and glared at Avery, her chest rising and falling
violently with anger.
Avery pulled Josephine away and said, “Let’s go.”
Josephine kept turning her head back and saw Lewis rushing out to pick Sierra up from the ground. His
expression of tenderness could be seen clearly through the rain from such a distance.
Yet he didn’t even glance at Josephine who was also in the rain.
Avery started the motorcycle engine, and they disappeared into the rain.
The heavy shower blurred Josephine’s vision, and the towering building lost its outline in the rain as
well.
