Chapter 38 Not Letting You
Errol threw open the door, turned on the light, and quickly looked around.
A small speaker and a charger seemed to have fallen onto the floor. Apart from that, nothing seemed
unusual about the room.
Not seeing Cedric, Maia was relieved.
“I told you something must have fallen.”
Errol still felt that something was off but didn’t dwell on it. “You’re lucky that it wasn’t a burglar. You
could’ve been in danger.”
“Errol’s right. It’s not safe to live all by yourself nowadays. Why don’t you move in with me?”
“It’s okay, Aunt Tess, the security at Cloud Nine is top–notch. I’ll be fine.” Maia knew that no thieves
could break into her apartment… just her ex–husband.
She didn’t want them to know he was there, or they might get the wrong idea.
Maia closed the bedroom door and saw Tess and Errol off. After telling her again to be careful, they
finally left.
When the door was finally closed, Maia let out a huge sigh of relief.
Just as she turned around, Cedric suddenly appeared and held her against the wall.
“Would it be so bad if they saw me here?” he whispered into her ear.
“Of course!” Maia said curtly. “We’re divorced, all right? They might get the wrong idea if they saw you

Upset, Cedric held her chin. “Are you so eager to distance yourself from me?”
“Isn’t that what you always wanted? You should be glad, right?”
He snorted. “Well, I’m not letting that happen..”
As Maia felt flustered, he kissed her hard, stirring up her pent–up feelings. Catching herself, Maia
immediately pushed him off her.
“No!”
Just as she tried to slip away, he grabbed her by the waist and scooped her up.
“Cedric, do I need to remind you that we’re fucking divorced?” Maia struggled.
Paying no attention to her, he strode toward the master bedroom and tossed her onto the bed.
“What the hell are you doing?”

“Finishing off what we started, of course.”
Maia’s eyes widened. “You’re crazy!”
She regretted tricking him now.
He smirked. “I was never one to leave things undone.”
Suddenly, his phone rang.
He cursed and checked his phone–it was a call from his mother.
“Yes?”
Garbled by the sound of roaring wind, Rita’s desperate voice came through. “Cedric, come to Central
Tower now! Zera is threatening to jump off the building, and she says she wants to see you!”
Hearing this, Maia smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck.
“So what would it be? Stay here with your ex–wife, or stop your fiancée from jumping off the building?”
She said it sweetly.
Cedric knew she was doing it on purpose.
Rita’s voice came through again, “Where are you now, Cedric? Is that a woman’s voice?”
Cedric hung up and looked at Maia. “Sweet dreams.”
He got up and hurried out of her apartment.
Hearing the door closing behind him, Maia muttered, “It’s the same old trick all over again.”
That was how Zera always tricked Cedric into leaving her time and again.
In the past, Maia would be heartbroken and wait for him until the next morning, but shet would not do
that anymore. Instead, she was grateful to Zera for helping her get rid of Cedric.
Smelling his scent lingering, Maia frowned and opened the window to air out the room.
Cedric’s McLaren raced through the streets late at night.
“So what would it be? Stay here with your ex–wife, or stop your fiancée from jumping off the building?”
Maia’s words seemed to echo in his mind.
There was no doubt that he wanted to stay with her. How could he give up on Maia now that she had
come back?

Still, since he took her away in front of everyone, the news reporters were going to blame it on Maia if

Also, having just begun to take charge of Starlight Entertainment, Maia could not afford to be
associated with scandals, let alone a woman’s death.
Therefore, he couldn’t allow Zera to die now.
He had failed to protect Maia in the past, and he would not allow anyone to hurt her ever again, not
even through gossip!
Cedric stepped on the gas and sped toward Central Tower.
Since Zera was not only an influencer but also Cedric’s fiancee and the adopted daughter of the
Larkins, the incident gained wide media coverage.
After Maia hung up her phone, several push notifications–from various media outlets popped up. There
were even livestreams with millions of viewers.
Zera’s fans had rushed to the site with banners and signs, begging Zera to get down from the rooftop.
Seeing Zera swaying dangerously on the rooftop’s edge, Maia mused calmly, “There’s no way she’s
going to jump, okay?”
She then saw Cedric arriving at the scene.
“Cedric has arrived. Some netizens speculate he’s late because of his ex–wife, Maia Burgess. Well,
they did seem to have something going on at the press conference, didn’t they?” the reporter on the
livestream said, rather pointedly.
As Cedric reached the rooftop, he looked at Zera and frowned. “Cut it out, will you?”
