Chapter 42 I Always Keep My Word
Maia still could not believe it. She saw her mother’s psychiatric report herself.
“Yes, I have your mother’s health reports for the last five years at least,” Phil admitted. “Her psychiatric
reports were included. I kept them to use them as leverage if I found something wrong. But she was
totally healthy! She was never diagnosed with depression.”
Phil’s final words echoed in Maia’s head. Her mother was a healthy woman!
Maia was taken aback by the news about her mother two years after her death.
If what Phil said was true, why would the hospital release a false report? What were they trying to hide?
If her mother did not commit suicide, what exactly caused her death?
What was going on here?
As Maia remained silent, Phil’s concerns grew.
“The financial manager who handles our company’s annual health checks is a close friend,” he
insisted. “I guarantee these reports! The files are still on my computer. I can forward them to you right
away!”
Phil fumbled for his cell phone, eager to send them to Maia.
Maia frowned as she watched him. “Why didn’t you say something sooner? She’s your sister, your
family! How could you just stand by when her death was so suspicious?”
If Phil had told her sooner, she could have asked the medical examiner to examine her mother’s body.
She would do everything in her power to make sure that the murderer paid for what he did!
While Phil listened, he was crying. She did not know if they were from fear or his last ounce of

“I…” Phil could not respond. He only sighed heavily while he wiped his tears.
Maia sneered at Phil’s response. She decided not to continue questioning him, as it would be
meaningless.
She mumbled quietly to herself. “It looks like nothing is more significant than human greed. Not even
the life of a person.”
“Are you alright?” Buck asked as he looked at her with concern.
Maia shook her head. She took a moment to collect her thoughts and turned to Phil. “Buck will inform
you on what to do next.”
Phil nodded obediently. He was intimidated by how scary–looking Buck was.

“I’ll leave the rest to you.” Maia glanced at Buck and left for the washroom.
As cold tap water splashed on her face, Maia calmed down. She looked at herself in the mirror. to
process the possibility that her mother was murdered.
‘Maia, you’re on your own on this. You cannot go down like this. There are still a million battles to fight.
You need to find the person who killed Mother. You cannot fall here.”
Outside the bathroom, she heard people talking.
“Ms. Maia created such a huge stir when she came. The board of directors are already in the
conference room on the 18th floor, but she hasn’t shown up. It’s been 10 minutes since the meeting
started!”
“You’re so ignorant! This is just her tactic to intimidate them. After all, this was her first meeting
with them since she became the chairwoman!
“You’re making her sound invincible. How good could she be? She’s just a woman.
Maia chose that exact moment to exit the restroom, causing the other female employees to freeze.
They scrambled to greet her respectfully.
Maia nodded in acknowledgment. As she brushed past them, she whispered, “Aren’t you a woman as
well? Isn’t it ridiculous to insult yourself?”
Maia’s tone was unusually calm. She just smiled at the ladies and walked towards the elevator.
The staff members were left looking embarrassed as they hurried back to their respective
stations.
The glass doors to the conference room flew open as Maia strolled into the room. She nodded. and
smiled at everyone present. “Sorry for being late.”
The board of directors stared at her with displeasure, clearly unsatisfied that she had kept them
waiting.
“Ms. Maia, you are late for your first meeting with us! Your courage is admirable!”
“It appears our positions are meaningless to you. You don’t respect us enough to be on time!”
“I’m worried about the future of our company now!”
As most of them started to voice their dissatisfaction, Maia remained silent. She quietly took her seat
and studied them. Her eyes were cold as she continued to smile warmly at them.

The dissatisfaction immediately died down. However, this did not calm their anger. Instead,” their fury

“I apologize for being 10 minutes late. I’m sure you won’t be too upset because we’re all rational adults.
The reason that I was late was due to our company’s missing funds amounting to a couple million
dollars.
This announcement silenced the resentment of the board of directors. They were all focused on the
money laundering issue now.
“A couple million? How did the financial department allow this to happen?”
Robert Flint, who was sitting at the right, exclaimed while shaking his head. “Mr. Liden, is an airhead.
How could he have replaced his predecessor? I don’t even know why he was given a promotion!”
“Where’s Phil? How is he absent from such an important meeting? Was he the one responsible for this
problem?”
Everyone in the room started making speculations and throwing accusations.
Maia looked at the chaos and said, “My uncle has already transferred all his shares in the company to
me. He won’t be attending any meetings from this day on. As for the missing funds, they’ve been fully
recovered. So, you have nothing to worry about.”
Most of the board of directors present were no fools. They knew exactly what Maia meant by
this.
“As for my position as CEO, I understand that some of you may be dissatisfied. Starlight
Entertainment’s market value has been declining, which I am sure you all understand. Fortunately, this
situation will not persist after I take over. I always keep my word!”
Maia’s soothing voice echoed throughout the room. Those present adjusted their glasses and studied
Maia closely. She reminded them of a distant past.
Years ago, a fearless rookie gave the same speech while standing in the same position as Maia.
